People like to feel safe and when you are in a group you feel safe because you are surrounded by your peers and if the group is wrong all the blame doesn't fall on you it falls on the group. And it is a hell of a lot easier to deal with failure when you are with a group then when you are alone and you take the full force of the failure. And this type of thinking I think doesn't involve the use of critical thinking thinking skills when a person uses various types of heuristics in their decision making. If you look at the six attributes of being a critical thinking (being open-minded, seeking truth, articulating relevant premises, being thorough, using logic and reason, and communicating effectively) you can see that most of the heuristic do not follow any of these
