This made it very easy for me to become the optimistic, self-confident woman that I am. It has always been fairly easy for me to meet and connect with new people and I had very little trouble with self-esteem. Likewise, I have always loved the stage and never once have experienced stage fright, but that all changed when I was put in the driver’s seat. This experience, along with some others, has changed the way I approach certain situations. For instance, I began my first job at TJMaxx and the first time a customer became upset with me I stayed calm and collected as I explained to them the situation. Luckily, my manager was standing there with me to back me up. For that incident, I knew that there was no way out but to fix it to the best of my ability. Although the customer still left a bit irritated, my manager complimented me on the way I handled the…

As a resident assistant, “my community” is my floor and the thirty two residents who reside in my wing. For me, it is almost impossible to properly do my job without fulfilling the citizenship portion of the social change model. I actively help others in my community by sitting at the duty desk, leaving my door open, and being a part of our floor GroupMe. All of these things are ways that I make myself available to my residents to answer their questions and get to know them. Essentially through these forms of communication, my residents can reach me at anytime during the day. Whether it is a resident who had a bad day and wanders down to the lobby to talk, a resident who messages the group to ask what bus to take from College Avenue to Busch,…

I hopped off the bus, my backpack bouncing against my back. A combination of gravel, road salt, and snow crunched beneath my boots as I turned down my driveway. Leafless trees lined my pathway, their branches heavy with wet snow. All the way down the drive I slipped and slid as fast as I could without landing in a snowbank. It had been a stressful week: there had been a rehearsal for the musical every day; several important deadlines were coming up; and, most importantly, I hadn’t heard from my camp yet about being accepted into the Aide/CIT program.…
