My First Deer Hunting
It was opening day for deer hunting, 5:00 AM, I just woke up. I was getting ready to go out putting everything go out and I just had a feeling, similar to the one that professional athletes have before a game. It was my third year hunting and spent so many days sitting and waiting and I knew that I would get my chance to shoot a deer. When I got to the my deer stand I was so tired, but I was determined to stay up. I knew I couldn’t go take a nap and miss the chance to shoot my first deer. Before I went my dad reminded me, “You have to be very quiet while you’re out there, in the woods so that you don’t scare the deer away,” and then he joked, “never mind make noise so that they come towards me.”

The dog would always come over and scare some small animals and my dad was always worried that the dog would scare large animals like deer. So when I heard a second noise and saw a small four legged figure appear from the bushes, my first thought was that dumb dog just scared all the deer away. Then the next thing I know I am staring directly at a deer. It was standing perfectly still so I lined up a shot and in between my shaking from nerves I pulled the trigger and took a shot. The loud bang made it run off in the direction it came from. I waited a little bit then I went down to look for it and I was looking everywhere but I couldn’t find a blood trail anywhere so I thought I might have missed it, but then right next to the bushes I saw them. There were a few drops of blood on the ground next to the bushes the deer came from. I felt a sudden urge of excitement. I followed the trail to find my first deer lying dead on the ground and that was the happiest moment of my life. For those of you who have never gone hunting, it is the most thrilling moment you will ever experience there is no feeling like it, and only those who have shot a deer know the adrenaline rush it

“Today is hunting day. After breakfast we shall go hunting for rabbits.” The hunter stared down at the rifle with such love and compassion that he had forgotten all about everything that happened half a decade ago and rather reminisced about the memories held within the general idea of hunting. Those memories where he and his father would travel to a local forest where they’d hunt and bond. There would be those rare occasions where he would actually shoot the animal down and he and his family would sit down at the table and have dinner like a normal…

A young deer has strayed away from her herd and is innocently grazing on grass. Ten yards away, a hungry wolf pack slowly stalks toward the fawn after trailing her for days. The deer senses what's happening and darts away, but it's too late, the fawn is as good as dead. The snowy terrain works to the wolf's’ advantage, with their huge paws acting like snowshoes. The wolves advance as their strongest member leads the chase. The pups watch from the sidelines as the deer quickly tires out. The head wolf quickly latches on to the fawn’s nose and brings her to the ground. The deer thrashes as more wolves come and attack her. Not long after, the fawn gives up her fight and the wolves feast.…

deer was shot in the same place quartering away as if it was standing broadside, the vitals would be missed. This is only one example of why someone must have sufficient practice shooting their bow. Moving on to the next step in prepping; Scouting. Scouting is essential to having a successful season. In this case, success is defined as harvesting mature deer, both bucks and doe. So how does one scout? Scouting is done by walking around the property which the hunter will hunt, looking for…

When he got a little closer, he saw a very large animal who was covering an abnormally large amount of ground in a short amount of time. He describes the animal as to cover about fifteen to twenty feet in just two strides, while not running. The creature made absolutely no noticeable noise. He mentions what he saw was the creature standing seven to seven and a half feet tall and an estimated five hundred pounds in weight. He describes the creature as being muscular and covered with dark fur, with long arms and hunched over posture. The deer hunter states that the creature moved quickly down the hillside and was gone in just a few seconds. Like both of the above incidents, it happened in a wooded area which provides plenty of coverage for the…

The first hour and a half we listened to the birds and watched the squirrels eat away at the trail mix. The sight of this made me hungry so I got out my peanut butter sandwich and red Gatorade. Around 4:45, I was lightly sleeping when I heard a loud snap from a few hundred yards away. My mind began racing as I tried to figure out what could have made that noise. Every couple minutes I could hear another branch break and it was getting closer and closer. An hour later the noise had moved from a few hundred yards in front of us to less than 30 yards behind us. “Don’t move” my dad whispered. We could hear leaves crunching under the feet of whatever was behind us. The noise continued onto the path that leads right to the bait pile. I slowly turned my head to the left and saw a 325-pound bear with a furry, black coat. Instantly my breathing became heavy, my whole body was shaking and my heart was about to pound out of my chest. I grabbed by gun and raised it to my shoulder, almost dropping it from all my shaking. I rested my Remington pump shotgun on the chilly aluminum edge of the Rivers Edge tree stand. “Click” I took the safety off of my shotgun and looked down the iron sights. The bear was licking the frosting on top of the white cedar log. BANG! The bear spun and took off into the thick green underbrush and fell after 20 yards. I couldn’t believe it; I was so excited. My dad and I waited 30 minutes and then we got down from the tree stand and followed the trail to where the bear was laying. I reached down and touched the smooth, plush coat of the bear, thanking it for the meat it would provide for my…

Being one of my later hunts of the season, it was very cold. Nearing the end of the season I was anxious to finally get a deer, as we hadn’t even seen one all season. It was already a weird season so far: beginning with a strange heat wave, ending abruptly with a cold front. It had snowed the night before, only about an inch. We put our teeth (claws that help with traction) on the bottom of our boots, just to be safe.…

It is a freezing twenty-two degrees outside. Even though it is still too dark to see, as you look over the hills, you see a breathtaking sunrise that will soon creep through the heavy fog. Every breath that you take is like smoke coming out of a dragon's nostrils. As you are waiting patiently, still, and quietly, you finally see your kill, the white-tail deer. Without a doubt, the white-tail deer should be hunted.…

so we did so. we arrived at my grandma’s, eat, and left and got back into hunting mode. but as we were, we look over and see a massive buck running across the field and then it jumped an 8 foot fence at a dead sprint heading right to our spot. We hurry back to our spot got set up and we hear splashing through the river. My dad looks back and says, “it's him”. We set up and went to bed early. I could hardly sleep. The whole night is kind of a blur, but the next morning around 5:00, my dad woke me up and we all set out into the darkness. Hiking up to the area where we thought the elk would be, we saw a huge, 8 point bull elk, but it was before shooting light and we had to let him run off. After this, my dad and I found a small meadow in and sat down to wait for shooting light. As the meadow filled with light, we heard tons of shots all around, but mostly down the hill below us, we saw nothing, so after an hour or so, we moved on. After a while trekking through some thick brush, we found a clearing. The cycle of hiking, waiting, and seeing nothing repeated itself a few times. Then, in the closing minutes of daylight, we came across Kotchwar, who had downed a cow elk an hour before. We all headed back to the spike camp. Kotchwar headed back to the main camp, and my dad and me felt some disappointment watching him leave, but this had happened before and my dad had gotten an elk, so we had hope. We made these horrible MRE like things for dinner and went to bed, feeling optimistic for the coming…

    The Great Outdoors

Not only is hunting an exhilarating experience but so is the feeling of being surrounded by wilderness. During winter times since I was 12 years old, my father would take me out on long drives in the middle of winter to hunting sites just outside of Edmonton. What made the drive not seem so long was the scenic route we would always take. Every once in a while I would see little white rabbits hopping around and leaving miniature footprints all in the snow next to the road. Further down the road we would pass a fairly big hill that had two pine trees at the top of it. I always wondered how long they had been there considering the fact that they were over thirty feet high. Finally we would get to the hunting ground and make are way down to a little patch of brush where we would crouch and wait for the deer to pass by. The feeling of the cold snow crunching under my boots, the frost covered branches of the bush we were nestled under, and all the little footprints that surrounded us gave me a feeling of unity with nature. After hiding in our spots for a long while, usually until my feet and toes were completely frozen it seemed, my father would whisper “Here comes one right now”. A few moments later I’d hear a loud bang and we’d be back on the road with our trophy and bragging rights. We have carried on this tradition every…
