When my mom began her career as an aide for a student with autism, I would have never imagined the impact that the student would have on my own life. I learned how to be patient and how to deal with behavior issues. Not only did I learn how to handle specific situations, but I also gained a strong connection with this student. Over the years, this individual became one of my best friends, who I greatly admire. Watching my mom assist the student through elementary school, middle school, and high school truly showed me how great of an impact that teachers can have on a student’s life. This student exceeded all expectations by graduating high school and attending college. My mom helped make her success possible and without my mom’s guidance, the student may not have had the desire to pursue a college degree. Through these experiences, I have found my passion and love within teaching individuals. I want to be that teacher who motivates and pushes their students to be the best that they can be. With my minor in applied behavior analysis (ABA), I have a significant amount of options and this is all because of the options that Ball State has provided me. My student teaching experience at Cowan Elementary School in the spring of 2019 will prepare me for my first teaching position. Not only will the student teaching experience guide me toward a successful future, but also all of my practicum experiences will allow me to reach my goals as a teacher.
