My primary motivation for being a member of the Corps of Cadets is to develop myself as a leader. In order to do this, I need to work on both my strengths and weaknesses. An aspect that I need to improve upon is understanding the viewpoints of others. This trip would give me the opportunity to interact with people with different backgrounds and leadership styles. I would be able to not only better an area of improvement for myself, but also include leadership styles of others with my own, to become a more effective leader within the Corps of Cadets. Furthermore, by being exposed to a group of people with different cultural backgrounds, I would be better equipped to handle leadership situations and conflicts, between those with different viewpoints. The importance of understanding the difference between individuals with different cultural backgrounds has become more important than ever before, and this trip would provide me with the knowledge to not only be able to understand the difference, but to be able to lead a diverse group, like those within the Corps of Cadets. Finally, attending the Washington DC Excursion would learn about leadership from those with more experience. Whether it be from members of the Corps who are older than me, or more knowledgeable people that I am able to meet on this excursion, I will be able to improve my leadership

Last summer, I endeavored a life changing experience. American Legion Buckeye Boys State is a leadership program. It is the best Boys State program in the nation. On top of this, it is among the top programs for leadership, growth, and is a meeting of the greatest minds of Ohio, and by proxy, of the nation. But it’s so much more than that. From Day One, the minute you step off the bus, it instantly becomes an incredible experience. Everyone, people who have never even met before, are shaking everyone else’s hands, introducing themselves, and campaigning for positions before anyone has even dropped their luggage off. It was breathtaking, truly, and it made me realize that I too had to step up. Naturally, I did just that. I started meeting people,…

Leadership is a very powerful trait that many wish to possess, but only few have the ability to appropriately carry out the task. It is a trait that is not only God-given, but also learned throughout life as we are given many leaders to observe as we journey throughout childhood and into adulthood. With my service in the military approaching 28 years, I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve under some very talented leaders within my varied career in the Air National Guard. I’ve also been given many opportunities to travel to a variety of places and countries that most people that I grew up with in Mississippi only dream of visiting. Since joining the Air National Guard in 1989, it has been a rewarding career both as an enlisted…

The three top terminal values that I picked for my individual model of leadership are: “salvation”, “health” and “family security”. My top three instrumental values that I chose for my individual model are: “obedient”, “responsible” and “logical”. When I think of my individual values I first think of my spiritual well-being, which for me is ultimately salvation. I didn’t think of my physical and mental well-being, which is my overall health. As part of my individual values I include family security, since for me my family is one of my main priorities in life. I believe that these three values that I mentioned are essential in my life and these three values are what keep me feeling well and balanced.…

I recall managing a project to validate software for a simulations program used to analyze the risk associated with maintaining the safe operation of a nuclear power plant. But, I’m only going to go into detail on one. I was an emerging leader, and it was a class that you apply to take when you’re going into your sophomore year, and was aimed at bringing together a diverse array of leaders from all types of organizations on campus. The class was directed by my school’s head of the Center for Leadership & Service department and she certainly is great at her job. Every class was different and unique. Some were aimed at a different way to look at the world, those around you, the way others think, the way others are treated in society, and a wide array of popular leadership theories and insights into how to inspire others and yourself. I still remember what my class came up as our definition of what leadership is to us and it still applies to me today. It was, “Leadership is a continuous developmental process towards the growth of oneself and those around them.” I like the idea of trying to have the mentality of always choosing the positive option in life. This, and the other leadership experience’s I have had are some of the few experiences that I have walked away truly feeling like I grew as a person, taking away with me both new knowledge and leadership skills that will dramatically help me handle the daily struggles that the professional world offers. The leadership programs I attended set a catalyst to my interest in people…
