My Leadership Experience Essay
In the beginning of 2001 I was a SGT in the 82nd Airborne Division, by January 2002 I was standing in front of the Battalion Commander’s desk being read my second Field Grade Article 15 in seventy days. I was being demoted to Private First Class, being sent to Correctional Custody in Camp Lejeune, South Carolina for thirty days and being moved to a new company when I returned. The first field grade was for disobeying a lawful order from three senior NCO’s, the Brigade CSM, Battalion CSM, and my Platoon Sergeant. They had all told me in the same day at separate times to get a haircut and I failed to, the second was for stealing from the company supply room while on extra duty from the first field grade.

Introduction
It all began when I arrived in 1-504th at Ft Bragg, NC in October of 2000 from Korea as a promotable Specialist with only 4 years in the army. I had only been a Specialist for a month when the chain of command decides that I was ready to be a sergeant without ever leading soldiers during training. This is part the of the NCO creed that I think most about. Because of some of the leaders that believed in me during my time of mistakes, I have been able to not only advance in my carrier but I am sought out by seniors, peers and my subordinates for my experiences in my career. Soldiers look up to leaders that have made mistakes and used them in a positive way to improve themselves. I have shared my story with soldiers that have been in the army for years and as a Drill Sergeant soldiers that were just coming in to the army to show them that we are just human and will make mistakes, the true measure of a man is what he will do after that

    There are many awards given out for leadership; however, watching Marines succeed because of the time and effort that their leaders have invested in them can be far more rewarding than any medal or certificate. There are many different methods and theories on leadership; however, some approaches are almost universal amongst leaders. Leadership is a continuous process, which requires limitless dedication that will constantly push Marines to their limits. Leaders should know not to fraternize with their subordinate Marines because of the ramifications that this causes, such as a loss of respect for the leader, and a loss of overall discipline. Leaders should know how to approach their Marines in any situation, and strive to understand their Marines’ strengths and weaknesses in order to help the Marines improve themselves. The subordinates who have good leaders will often put forth an extra effort because their leaders have set higher standards by challenging them, and they will strive to improve their weaknesses because the leader has held them accountable for their actions. Leaders may often find themselves wondering if their leadership has had any effect on their Marines; however, it becomes quite obvious that they are being effective whenever their Marines emulate the example that has been set. Anyone can tell their subordinates to do the right thing, but it takes real leadership to convince subordinates why they should do the right thing and then ensure that they actually do it; this can be accomplished if the leader is continuously doing the right thing, and holding their Marines to the same standard.     As soon as I walked in, he ripped my corporal rank of my chest, threw it on the ground, and proceeded to give me the worst ass chewing of my life. I felt less than a man by the time he was done with me. Afterwards, I moped around for a day or two. Dragging my feet and not really caring about anything anymore. I had lost my sniper team, my promotion, and my promotable status. All because I had to go out and think that I was too good to get help from anyone.
