Personal Narrative: My Army Career
My army career was right on track. I had been in the 3 years at this point, coming up on 4, and already had completed air assault school, been awarded my expert infantry badge, and had one 15 month deployment under my belt. I was assigned to the scout platoon sniper section and was waiting for a sniper school packet to get final approval from the company commander. I had been studying for the sergeant promotion board for months. I knew that study guide like the back of my hand, I knew whatever question I was asked by the Command Sergeant Major I would have an answer for. I went to the promotion board that morning and blew it out of the water. My dress uniform was perfect. No one was able to find a single deficiency. The Soldiers Creed and the …show more content…
As soon as I walked in, he ripped my corporal rank of my chest, threw it on the ground, and proceeded to give me the worst ass chewing of my life. I felt less than a man by the time he was done with me. Afterwards, I moped around for a day or two. Dragging my feet and not really caring about anything anymore. I had lost my sniper team, my promotion, and my promotable status. All because I had to go out and think that I was too good to get help from anyone. All the good that I had done up to that point was completely forgotten. I was just another shit bag as far as my Chain of Command was concerned. But then I realized something. All they did was demote me. All they did was take my section. That was it. I wasn’t being kicked out of the army. I wasn’t getting busted down to private. In my mind that said one thing to me, I messed up but they need me. I’m a good soldier. I can come back from this. I spent the rest of the time in the field go out of my way to get things done. I volunteered for every detail no matter how bad it was. I made sure tasks I was given were done fast and to the best of my ability. I was determined to show my Company that I may have messed up but I was willing to do whatever it takes to get back where I was and that I wasn’t going to let a little trouble completely destroy me or keep me from having what I had worked so hard to

However, this welcome was quickly followed up by his addressing what I did wrong. “I know it’s your first day, so you’re not in trouble, but for future reference you need to make sure that you are wearing your uniform correctly with your shirttail tucked in; and when you enter an officer’s office, you must salute and report in.” I was shocked! I had just walked in the door and already he was making sure that I did everything correctly, right down to the smallest details. Never in any other school that I had attended in the past had anyone seemed to care that much about what I did, and it was this kind of behavior from the rest of the faculty and many of my peers prompted me to raise my standards to that of a FUMA cadet. In such a short amount of time I had already formed close bonds with the faculty and my fellow cadets, and I didn’t want to let them down. So, I rose to meet those new standards that were set for me to the best of my ability. Fork Union Military Academy instills the core values of respect, integrity, faith, character, and discipline. Because of these core values and the support, I received from my parents and my school, I have become the man I am…

My chief said, "You will be finished with all of your qualifications in six months. If you need anything come to me." Then I asked, "What is the deal with the nub thing?" He replied, "Son, if you know what is good for you, you will just grit your teeth and bear it." I thought it best to get started right away, so I grabbed a book and sat in Sonar to study. By the time the ship was out to sea I had already read everything I needed to get my first interview on the hydraulics system. I walked down to the machinery room and talked to the auxiliary division's Leading Petty Officer. He said, "You are getting an early star aren't you." I replied, "I will have my fish within six months." He went forward with the interview and said, "You will do fine if you know this much every time." Later that day I was studying in the Combat Systems Electronics Space when I heard "Fire in the torpedo room. Fire in the vertical launch system". I did not know what to do, so I ran into sonar and the watch section explained that it was just a drill. Then, of course, everyone laughed at me. The Sonar Supervisor explained my responsibilities for casualty response. After the fire drill we had a flooding drill and a hydraulic rupture…

During my junior year the biggest event I had to plan was the social event for the battalion: military ball. The event was one eagerly looked forward to, and rightfully so, as it was always a blast with the cadets and fostered many memories that will last a lifetime. I took planning this event very seriously and in the end many told me that it was the best military ball to date. Several cadets came to me after the formalities had concluded and thanked me for putting in the time and effort to make military ball happen. Seeing their gratitude and smiles on their faces made me feel appreciated and I knew that all the hours I had put in and almost wanting to tear my hair out in frustration had not gone in vain. During my senior year, another crucial event within the program changed. The criteria for our annual inspection had been altered drastically and we had to start from scratch will almost everything. This inspection is what JROTC works toward the entire school year, due to the fact that if a program receives a low score a certain amount of times, then the program can be disbanded. I, along with my staff, worked for months making sure that we had everything we needed and that our presentation was the best it could be. When the day of inspection finally came around, our hard work paid off. The battalion received a perfect score and was officially the best JROTC program in the county. This was the first time since my high school JROTC program’s conception in 2000 that we had received a perfect score on the…

During boot camp, I was never in a leadership role and therefore I tried to fly as far under the radar as possible. The recruits around me that I had made friends with in boot all tried to take this same mentality, to make boot camp go by as quickly as possible. However, I had failed many times to go un-noticed and this led to my rack-mate and I both spending a lot of our time on the quarterdeck. This soon began to cause conflict between my rack-mate and I, and led to the recruits around us trying to solve our problems for us. Soon I had a negative connotation and it took the rest of boot camp trying to make a positive impact on those around me, and get back to spending more time learning and less time on the quarterdeck. Through my experience at boot camp I had learned that even though an event may seem insignificant in some eyes, it is much larger in others’ eyes.…

Four years ago, Brooks AFB was being closed which meant that all military and civilians would be moving onto other positions at other bases. I was fortunate enough to finally get an offer to gp to Lackland and be a supervisor of a section. I was extremely excited at the opportunity because I would be working in a different area, the job would be completely different than what I was normally used too, and I would also meeting a new group of people. However, what I did not expect was the backlash and harsh treatment that I was going to endure for the short period of time I held the position. As soon as I met the Division Chief of the new section, he immediately stated, although I was pleasant, personable and my background was impeccable, I was really not wanted there and they would make sure that I didn’t last long. What I found out was that I had apparently taken the position from one of their people and they of course were not pleased. This caught me off-guard and I immediately felt I was on the defensive. Because I was on the DoD Priority Placement Program, I was unable to turn the position down because if I did, I would be on my own to find a new job. Nevertheless, I decided regardless of their behavior, I was going to make the best of the situation and move forward with their blessings or not. Unfortunately, meeting with the individual whose position I…

Upon finishing my first cup of coffee, my son pulls in the driveway and enters the house with the words, "MOM I NEED TO TELL YOU SOMETHING." With heart wrenching thoughts, I sat back in my chair to prepare myself. Never once thinking of the rumors, which had orders coming to activate and deploy the 39TH Infantry Brigade, of the Arkansas National guard, for a 2ND tour of duty in Iraq. I guess I had just blocked this out especially since; My American Soldier's enlisted time would be up October 1, 2008. As he took a deep breath, I could not believe my ears. He said, "We've received Title 10 orders (Federal Activation & Deployment) as of October 1, 2008, and before you say anything I've re-enlisted for another 6-year term." Upon these words, I totally fell apart and I mean literally. The tears flowed with no…

Significant events allow us as humans to achieve characteristics that we once did not think we could. Joining the military is the big umbrella above all of my significant events. Prior to the military, I was a cashier at a gift shop. Friends did not think that I was cut out for the military but I have proven them wrong. Throughout the years, I have grown to have confidence in all things I believe in. I have become daring, I do not like to take “no” for an answer, and I always think that where there is a will there is a way. These significant events have made me self-confident. I joined the military 14 years ago. Prior to me joining, I had some goals set for myself; however, due to the many obstacles that I was experiencing, I did…

In 2004 at the young age of 19 I found myself in a new place, a new world that I had never seen before. I joined the Marines out of High School to see the world and learn about other people. What I learned in the military I have applied it to my daily life. I learned to never judge someone by what they look like or how they live. Just because it is new to you or different dose not mean it is wrong.…

I’m three miles in on a four-mile morning training run along the sandy Southern Californian coastline. I can’t breathe, and all I see is the ground an inch in front of my face. My Drill Sergeant’s booming voice jolts me back into my senses. I push myself up as I spit out the mouthful of wet sand between my teeth, and immediately my legs begin propelling me forward. My running buddy, De Guzman, already got 10 or so seconds on me so I lean forward, wipe my face, and keep advancing. For another what feels like an eternity, I feel my arms and legs robotically pumping. My heart is racing, my entire body is shaking, my eyes begin to slowly shut, and then I see it: Lieutenant Colonel McMahon standing by the Academy gates, announcing everyone’s times.…

Today this essay will be about disrespecting a Non Commission Officer or (NCO). There is many different ways and form’s of disrespecting an NCO. One way that you could disrespect an NCO is the way you talk, move, facial movements, how your voice is, your body language, and most of all how you present yourself towards an NCO. Lets start off with the way you talk. The way you talk can be a big factor in how your SGT can take it. So the best way to avoid any confrontation between you and your SGT is to always agree to what there saying. When they tell you something you do it. Its yes SGT Roger SGT. Its not well SGT, maybe SGT, or No SGT. You always have to be respectful towards Your SGT because in the military its all about the ranking system. You may not respect the person but you have to respect the rank. So you always have to be respectfull when there talking to you. Now the next thing that’s a big factor on being respectful towards a NCO is on how you move. When a NCO talks to you. You always have to stand at the position of parade rest. You have to stand up straight and with shoulder back, neck back and when there talking to you you have to look them straight in the eye. Now the next thing to do to respect NCO is your facial movements. When your NCO’S are talking to you have to look them straight in the eye without any facial movements . you cant cock your eye brows you cant roll your eyes, you have to pretty much have no facial expressions. You have to look them straight faced not laughting nothing. And now one of the last things about respecting NCO’S is the way your voice is towards the NCO. When you talk to someone like I said you have to be like yes sgt, no sgt, roger sgt, and when there talking to you. You cant have that toan in your voice where it sounds like your trying to retaliate, you cant have the voice like your trying to be better then your NCO. You have to know that…

I identify as an African American male who grew up facing the same issues that most African American males face i.e. raised by a single mother, not knowing my father, raised in a low income environment, blah, blah. I said all of that to say this; those factors haven’t plagued my life or my future. I embraced those negatives and turned them into positives. I had a really strong mother who made sure that I stayed on the right track in terms of my future success, and she did a great job. I joined the military the day after I graduated high school and haven’t looked back since. Life in the military has brought me many experiences, some good and some bad. But for the most part, the experiences have been good.…

I was raised in the military, my father, Lane Benefield, was a pilot for the U.S. Air Force. My mother, Annemarie Benefield, was a stay at home mother who took care of my brother, Mason Benefield, 3 years older than me, and I. My environment was ever changing sense we moved every three years to a new place. This however, allowed me to become great at making new friend and connecting. This also allowed for me to experience new cultures and types of people, from the far south to the east coast and across the Atlantic, I have had the opportunity to expand my mind and knowledge. Growing up in the military has also taught me the importance of manners and discipline. I remember when I was about 10 my dad made it a rule that if I forgot to answer with “yes sir” or “no sir”, I was required to do 10 push ups. Although the discipline wasn’t without justification though, it has come in handy more times that I can list, such as job interviews, meeting important people, and overall impression.…
