My High School Football Experience
“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure”-Colin Powell. It is always great knowing that each drop of sweat and pebble of dirt on your face from hard work will pay off and be rewarded in the end. My high school football experience was unlike anything I had ever dreamed of and taught me life lessons that I will never forget. From pushing hard to play as a freshmen, to winning state as a sophomore, and later leading the team to the semifinals as a senior captain holds a unique place in my heart. Although football in high school was the biggest part of my sports life, that was not the beginning. Starting at the age of five, my time was beginning to become consumed by watching, …show more content…
The summer workouts were finally over and it was time for normal practice and Friday night games. After all the hard work, the desire for victory was boundless. Every Monday through Thursday after school at 3:30 we started practice. Practice at the time was always a struggle and something I took for granted as a freshmen. Being able to practice every day after school with such a fantastic group of guys was not only something fun to do, but something to mentally clear and help your mind. I have now learned to enjoy coming home and cleaning off the sweat and dirt after long days, for it reminds myself that I am blessed with the ability to go out and play or work for my team or my job I have acquired. Finally the Friday night games began, and sadly my playtime was very minimal. This small amount of time spent on the field Friday nights was always expected as a freshmen, but was constantly difficult because of the desire to show the talents you are capable of. My job the majority of the time as a freshman was filling water and helping communicate with players and coaches on the field during games. Having this monotonous job as a freshman made my thoughts of playing football begin to dissipate, but now I am very joyful I did not give up on something that so positively impacted my life over the next three years. Our season finally came to an …show more content…
Although my height and weight stayed almost the same, my ability as a player had greatly strengthened. During my sophomore season, I made strong friendships with the senior leaders in which we were not only together when playing the sport, but when hanging out in general. This group of guys was not only exceptional athletes and friends, but also a group of mentors in which I still look up to. Still to this day I am blessed to be able to stay in contact and relish time with these guys. My playing time as a sophomore had increased slightly, but was still gaining experience for the next years to come. This season begins and our team was soon named district champs, having a 10-0 record going into playoffs. Playoffs could not have turned out any better, and our high school football team was named State Champions. Being a state champion in any sport, particularly football, had been a dream of mine for a very long time. My mind now goes back to this particular night, placing chills on my arms and creating an exultant mood in which I will never disregard. The numerous amounts of pictures taken holding that gold ball while kissing and crying is a vivid memory engraved in my heart. Winning this state championship was not only about receiving that gold ball, but was a testimony to myself that dedication and hard work with others will positively will give me strength to handle difficult times to

Likewise, perfection and happiness do not always come from winning or having money. The most important lesson I have learned this season was that being perfect is not about the scoreboard. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship with yourself, your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn’t let them down because you did everything you could – that there wasn’t one more thing you could have done, and when the going got tough, you did not put your head down and give up, but you fought on. Winning is not about who hits the hardest, but who can get hit hard and still keep moving forward. Applying that mentality to my life has made me a more successful and happy person regardless of whether or not I win, lose, triumph or fail. Life and football are very similar, both have their ups and downs, and your ability to keep a level head and never get too high or too low is what makes you a winner. The experience of my last year of high school football was the culmination of all the lessons I have learned through out my life, on and off the…

This month is crucial for anyone who wants to get a hint of playing time on Friday nights. Any of the guys who play football will do anything to get on the field, if a coach asks you to play a position they will do it just to get playing time. In my situation, I had two seniors fighting for my spot on the offensive line. I knew that both of them did not want to sit on the sidelines and watch some sophomore play in a spot they could of had. So the month of july I had to play and do almost everything perfect to earn a spot on varsity football. The camp was just wrapping up and I was to be told if I was going to be stay or be brought back down to the sophomore level. It was a super hot Wednesday, I could see the heat beating off the black track. As waves of heat beamed up of the turf /Coach came up to with the sternest look on his…

There are over seven billion people on this Earth, so what is it that makes me so different? I wear Nike, I drive a car, I play video games, I have chores, and could be considered a pretty normal person. I love, I laugh, I get angry, and I have emotions just like every other human being. The one thing I heavily identify with is football. For as long as I can remember I’ve played ball, and made some great friends along the way. The picture in the top left is a great representation of this. Football has taught me lessons of leadership, perseverance, toughness, how to deal with the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows. (Bottom left: aftermath of beating Staley) Above all else, the best thing it has taught me was loyalty. Not only loyalty to a cause, but loyalty to my brothers, and ultimately my family. Football has created a foundation for my character, and without it I am certain I would not be the same person I am today.…

As we entered the last week of practice, I wanted relish what I thought would be the last few moments of the season. The varsity head coach was present at the last day of practice, and I was surprised when he pulled me aside during a drill. He told me that he had noticed my success during the season, and he wanted me to join the varsity team; for the varsity team still had two weeks of practice left before the state tournament. I held in my excitement and accepted his offer.…

As a cheerleader, I took part in a high energy and enthusiasm activity, yet I craved more. “More” just so happened to be flag football. The summer before I entered the first grade I asked my parents if I could make the transition. My request was met with emotions including concern, intrigue, but most of all, support. My parents were not going to dissuade me from participating in any hobby, especially one I seemed so interested in pursuing. I showed up to the first practice with my curly, blonde hair pulled back in a tight ponytail. I was enthusiastic to learn and participate in the sport over which my whole family went ballistic each Sunday night in the dead of winter. Upon my much awaited arrival, the coach's wife asked what number I wanted to have on the back of my extra-small jersey. I thought ‘one’ was the…

For many, high school is the last place where they will play a sport at a competitive level alongside their peers. Many may refer to this as their "glory days" as they don't intent to play in college and look for other ways to spend their time. Since I'm attending a school where there are no sports teams on my campus, I realized there were a few areas of high school sports that I miss. These are a few of those things.…

When I decided to join cross country team my freshman year, I never envisioned myself being a part of what would become known as “the best team in Hammonton history.” Three years ago, I finished the season as one of the very worst on the team, with no expectations being placed on me for the future. Fast forward to one month ago, when I along with my fellow six varsity teammates lead Hammonton to its first Atlantic County Championship in school history. While much of my improvement can be attributed to my physical growth over the years, I would have never reached that level of success if I did not realize how important it is to maximize my effort in everything that I do. My success in Cross Country was not as much caused by my physical development, but more so by the evolution of my mentality.…

High school arrived faster than I thought was ever possible. It brought new faces, teachers, feelings, friends, etc. Those new feelings brought on something that adults told me never to do as I was growing up. The renowned phrase, “don’t ever give up on your dreams,” rung through my ears as I made the realization that soccer was no longer something I was passionate about. It felt as though I failed my parents and my peers, but I knew this was the most rational decision I could make for myself to ensure my…

I have never had played sports before and regret not doing so. Sure yeah i played soccer or football in middle school for fun, but i never really understand it. What made me want to play football was I wanted to be like my older brother and play football. I actual was quite similar to him when he played. I played freshman football in the same school as he did his freshman year. Throughout the year playing football I learn a lot I went to practice everyday like I’m suppose to and will admit I was scared the first practice with football pads. The first thing we did was a hit and wrap drill. I went in as the offensive player and all I had to do was run at an angle and let the defender hit me. So I was in my stance getting ready to run or getting ready to get hit I was looking at the defender and of course didn’t think he would hit hard due to how short he was so it made me less nervous. I ran on go and then I knew it I got hit and it was so painful I did not think that it would have hurt so much. After the impact I had tears I was hiding it so no one can see, from there I didn’t want to go again and I was thinking to myself is this really what I want to do for 3…

Not being able to play football for me has been extremely hard on me. I still went to every practice and all of the games, except now I’m on the sidelines and there is literally nothing I can do about it. For the rest of the season (8 games) I had to stand on the sidelines and watch the team play, and be unsuccessful. This was one of the worst things to watch, because I know that I would have been able to help the team if I could have been on the field.…

Basketball was invented in December 1891 by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician James Naismith. Naismith introduced the game when we was an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. At the request of his superior, Dr. Luther H. Gulick, he organized a vigorous recreation suitable for indoor winter play. The game involved elements of American football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball used was a soccer ball. Teams had nine players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the walls. By 1897-1898, teams of five became standard. The game rapidly spread nationwide and to Canada and other parts of the world, played by both women and men; it also became a popular informal outdoor game. U.S. servicemen in World War II (1939-1945) popularized the sport in many other countries. James Naismith devised a set of thirteen rules of basketball: 1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. 2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist. 3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, allowance to be made for a man running at good speed. 4. The ball must be held in or between the hands. The arms or body must not be used for holding it. 5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, striking or tripping in any way of an opponent. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul; the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made or, if there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game. No substitution shall be allowed. 6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violations of Rules 3 and 4 and such as described in Rule 5. 7. If either side make three consecutive fouls…
