The Importance Of Success In Cross Country
When I decided to join cross country team my freshman year, I never envisioned myself being a part of what would become known as “the best team in Hammonton history.” Three years ago, I finished the season as one of the very worst on the team, with no expectations being placed on me for the future. Fast forward to one month ago, when I along with my fellow six varsity teammates lead Hammonton to its first Atlantic County Championship in school history. While much of my improvement can be attributed to my physical growth over the years, I would have never reached that level of success if I did not realize how important it is to maximize my effort in everything that I do. My success in Cross Country was not as much caused by my physical development, but more so by the evolution of my mentality. During my first three years of cross country, I was always content with just being an average runner. Despite my intense dislike for running itself, I enjoyed the health benefits that running offered, …show more content…
I realized how much potential I had been concealing over the years, and this only motivated me to continue giving it my all. Even before the first meet of the season, my newly found work ethic and ability had astonished my coaches, and before I knew it, I had lofty expectations placed upon me. I fully intended on fulfilling those expectations, and from the first meet of season until the last, I was a part of the top seven, the seven runners that would that become known as the best in Hammonton history. I improved my 5k time by over a minute, and achieved goals that I would have never thought possible even a few months prior. When my season came to an end, I finally took the time to understand what I had accomplished, and took pride in results that came from all the hard work and determination. I had first hand results of what was possible if I put in all my

As I ran that hill I began to cry because of the pain. I thought my legs were going to give out from underneath me. The pain I was feeling helped me take a few strides that caused me to stumble a little, but soon regained my composure. I was at the top. All that was left was one last final turn, and then the downhill. I could see the finish line in the distance and then started sprinting. Coach Rojas was screaming at me to keep going and not to stop. At this point, my heart was pounding rapidly. My body was worn down, hot and exhausted. Crossing the finish line was the only thing on my mind. For a moment, I blocked off from the race and thought about all the hard work that went into the season. I crossed the finish line and at that moment I knew that I had put my sweat and tears into this race. I couldn’t feel my legs, all I wanted was water. Soon after I heard that we won Second place in the district which was the best the team has won. I felt no pain at this point since I was part of a group of people who loved this sport and put effort into it. It gave me happiness to be part of a team that now was like my…

I attempted to run longer before I stopped and began walking. I paced myself and even endeavored to keep up with some of the faster people on the team. Gradually, week after week, I could see myself progressing from a time in the mid-forties, to the low-forties, and finally into the thirties range. Between the first meet and regionals, we had about six more races, and regrettably, I came in last place in three of them. However, I refused to let my losses stand in the way of my motivation to get better. I kept training and before I knew it, it was the day of the regional…

My freshman year, I decided to join my high school Cross Country team. When I started running, it quickly became clear that I was not a gifted athlete. I was slow and often did not enjoy the sport. When the season first started, it took me forty minutes to run a 5k. This time was appalling but oddly, it was what kept me from giving up. There were times when I wanted to quit and go back to never running but the thought of that forty-minute 5k stopped me from doing so. I stayed on the team and pushed myself harder and harder every day. When I felt like stopping, I made myself go even further. I came to practice every single day and sometimes I stayed late. On the days that we did not have practice as a team, I ran on my own. I was dedicated…

How can such a grueling sport, like cross country, teach someone to be nurturing? Well, it’s strange. As a senior, I look back at where I began and reflect upon how far I’ve come. I’ve learned to be dedicated, supportive, independent, strong, and self-determined. However, what baffles me the most is to look at my teammates humble beginnings and to reflect upon how far they have come.…

Although I'm ecstatic about competing this year, I was not always this happy about running. Almost immediately did I find out that a simple task like running could become much more strenuous not only on my legs and lungs but on the mind. While my body adjusts to the challenges of dirt…

During my time running cross country last year, I attempted to push myself and inspire those around me. Even after the season had ended I wanted to push myself just a bit farther; I accomplished this by running a half marathon. After I had finished, my fellow teammates who did not run felt inspired by me, and they were sure that they wanted to run the same half marathon after the next season. Having inspired them, I felt as if I accomplished much more than running a half marathon. I was able to take a small part in leading them to their future…

Weighing 225 pounds, I recognized that I needed to lose weight. Losing weight wasn't that much of a challenge because I went to practice and walked five miles home. Now I weigh 170 pounds. In my first 400 meters race, I ran in 56.4 seconds, and I recently ran the same race in only 51 seconds. I went to both championships last year before I failed to qualify for the next round. However, going from nowhere to possibly breaking the school record this year has motivated me to do greater things in life. Even though track wasn't a life-changing experience, the small things I got out of it were important. For example, I lost weight and gained dedication, medals, and friends. I also learned that if I make the effort, tremendous things are…

As the old saying goes, “Those who can’t, teach.” Those are the precise words that got Bill Saunders to where he is today. As a child he spent his entire life growing up in the same brown colored house in Alpine, Utah. While in high school Bill decided to join the track team as a fun after school activity with his friends. He had never truly enjoyed running before so his expectations for the season weren’t exactly high by any means. Bill decided to join the long distance team his first season in ninth grade. Bill recalls contemplating quitting the team after the extreme amounts of pain he had been in after the first week. However, his mother, being the pushy, strong, good example in his life that he had needed, told him that if you start something, you must finish it, “I didn’t raise quitters!” He took his mothers words to heart and from that point he changed his mind set about track and went forth with the rest of the season having the goal of getting the school record for the one mile run. “It was a lot of hard work and I remember going to practice some days feeling like absolute garbage, but I knew what I had to do if I was ever going to reach my goals, so I stuck to it, and did just that.” At the end of his first track season, Bill had in fact broken the school record for the…
