My Life As An Immigrant
Being an immigrant brings both positive and negative impacts on my life. I cannot say that I was totally ignorant about the decision my parents had made for us. But I was totally unprepared when that day had finally come. Obscurely I remember, when we arrived at the LAX airport, I couldn’t understand a single word of this new world surrounding us. It seemed like all of my endeavors in English classes were useless. Luckily, my mother managed to have all of the documents set, and we peacefully crossed the border, officially entered the United States without getting in trouble. I was not aware, however, that there were even bigger challenges waiting for me. Although it was summer when I came, my first priority was to learn enough English to survive. During our stay at my aunt’s house, I did hundreds of grammar problems every day on the computer; I read the whole series of “The Magic Tree …show more content…
Because now I am the best English speaker in my family, my parents become more dependent on me. Reading mail, receiving phone calls, filling out healthcare forms, registering for school…almost everything that requires English communication with my family is my job. I see this as a great opportunity to get to know how to act in different situations. As a minor, I did many things that most kids in America won’t have a chance to do until they grow up. I also developed a habit of self-educating. Without my parents sitting by my side to guide me, I got used to doing everything myself, including learning. Not only do I have the ability to learn new materials on my own, but also the ability to self-control. I did not play video games or watch TV shows through midnight before I finish my homework. I did not go out with my friends and be home late. I focused on studying and did not end up on the streets. I am not a nerd, but I choose to reject those temptations. I am able to do that because I understand my goals

I talked to my great grandmother, on my moms side, and asked her many questions about our ancestors. "Most of the generations I know about have lived in New Mexico. Usually when people ask us we say Spain because we know our ancestors didn't come from Mexico. I'd say Spain" she said word for word. I also asked her how long ago they came and she didn't know so I assume they came a long time ago.…

As a recent immigrant myself I see a great value in the programs like cultural orientation for the new members of our community. Ascentria provides services for people of various cultural and social backgrounds. Lack of knowledge about the peculiarities of American culture, social norms as well as the ways this society functions can not only put the newcomers in uncomfortable situations, but also compromise their safety and security. I believe it is critical to provide the people who are to make this country their new home with all the necessary information, which would help their adaptation and integration into the American society.…

Title The biggest challenges of being an immigrant is knowing the language of the country that you are in, trying to communicate with people and getting bullied. It is really hard for an immigrant coming to america to learn english and especially speak english. Like in many languages from Asia there are seriant ways to pronounce a word and if you pronounce that word in a different way it could have a whole different meaning. Another reason why it is very challenging for an immigrant speaking and learning english is because their peers might make fun of them if they pronounce a word wrong, like in the book inside out and back again the main character Hà, who is a 10 year old girl from vietnam, moved to alabama during the…

I come from a family of immigrants who came here for a better living standard unfortunately, while growing up I witnessed money problems in the household. They had to work long hours and I struggled to focus on my own potential. My parents couldn’t spend much time with me and my siblings dealing with our own problems especially in school. As a result, I had a lack of confidence because I wasn’t at the same level as the rest of other kids and struggled doing well in school. I hate to say I didn’t have a strong role model because even though my father was around, he was always worried about other things and once in awhile he would spend time with me. I started not to take school seriously and become more rebellious and would always get complaints…

It is hard to be an immigrant or being the daughter of one. I still remember the day when my mom left me with my uncles to come to the United States, because on that day I acted as it was a regular day. I had a different perspective about my mom years ago, I used to call her “witch” because she always wanted me to my homework, have good grade at school; while my priority as a child was to have fun (play as a little child). When me and my family went to the airport to say goodbye to my mom, every thought I was going to cry, but I did not instead I said “finally.” I always regret myself for saying that, but I was a child whose priority was to play. After days and months I started to miss my mom, I was raised with my uncle; they were nice to me…

The interviewee I chose to interview is my mom, Maria Hernandez. She is currently 41 years old, she immigrated to the U.S.A when she was 20 years old. She came from San Luis de La Paz, Guanajuato, Mexico. My mom immigrated on November 1997. The reason why I chose to interview my mom was because before interviewing her I knew that she emigrated when she was 20 years old, and due to my dad already living in the U.S.A at the time. Therefore, I wanted to know if she had an easier journey to the United States of America and if she felt safer traveling in the late 90´s. Also, it could have made the journey easier due to her already knowing where exactly to travel to since my dad already lived in the U.S.A at the time.…

The policies about legal immigration status that they face to be allowed into the United States present quite a challenge for those wanting to come to the U.S. The rules and proper policies are very detailed and all paperwork with fees must be completed properly in order to be processed. The costs that are charged to file the paperwork are costly. This ensures that individuals that want to come to America are serious and committed to being legally immigrated. If I were an individual that was interested in becoming an U.S. citizen, the entire process could be very overwhelming. It would be more frustrating if I did not know and understand the language. That would make the paperwork process extremely difficult. As an immigrant, there are many…

I was four years old when my family immigrated to the United States from Ukraine. It was a crazy experience and a big life change for all of us. There were many obstacles to be faced living a life completely far away from what we used to call home. It was very difficult to leave my grandparents back in Ukraine. They were a significant source of encouragement for me especially my grandfather. He was my hero. He was the main nurturer who provided a lot of encouragement and support for me in the very hard times of my life. In times of crisis when life felt like a crashing wave, he was the one I always ran to for guidance. Like most immigrants, we didn’t know any English, therefore it was extremely hard to communicate with anyone.…

However, the main problem was that my parents didn’t know one word in the English language yet, they managed to find shelter for my brother and I while balancing multiple jobs. I was around the age of two and I caused my parents the most strain on their lives. As I grew older I faintly remember being handed off to least 3 different babysitters, starting from 5am in the morning till 6pm in the evening. At the shy age of five I would now comprehend my parents struggle with various issues such as taking care of me, their youngest child, or massive language barrier. In addition, to my parents having a difficulty learning English, so did I. I wasn’t surrounded by the English language, I didn’t acquire American friends or listen to my family speak English around the house; instead I learned every morning by watching Dora the Explorer on…

In a peaceful sterilized world full of opportunity and dreams, I immigrated to the U.S in 2005 when I was only six. Growing up in an American world while being an undocumented child has brought lots of scramble and strength to my character. My family fled Mexico looking for better opportunities and seeking new dreams. I grew up with my two benevolent parents, who have always guided me through thick and thin, and always perceived me to be good, and do good. I struggled with speech-language until high school. It was difficult to pronounce certain words, so instead of speaking my ideas or opinions, I would stay quite. The lack of proficiency in English-made me insecure to speak in front of the classroom. Many people believed I was a shy child, yet he/she did not know the real reason why I dislike participating. School children would tease each if he/she had a Mexican accent. That made me even more worried. The fact, that I saw my father continue to struggle with the English language it always resonated with me. My father would get frustrated when he could not pronounce certain words. My father would always take my siblings or me to doctor’s appointment, insurance companies, and banks to translate for him. It was difficult being a child not knowing what professionals were saying. They would use big words that I did not understand at the time. My father would get upset and tell me why I could not translate what he/she was…
