It was the second week of my first college class, after graduating high school, and I was taking Composition I with Dr. Mary Ellen Young. Dr.Young stood at the front of the class very poised and confident as she explained to us that we would begin working on our first writing assignment of the semester. I could feel my face drop and my mind grow heavy as she went over the details of the paper. She explained to us that this would be a descriptive essay of anything we wanted to write about. Frustration over took me and I decided to just start scribbling. I wrote down everything that came to my mind even if it didn't make sense and before I knew it I was actually free writing. My free writing then turned into actual sentences and those sentences into full paragraphs.
I was so proud of the paper I had just written and how descriptive I was as I wrote about my first hike up Pettie Jean Mountain. I described the beautiful melodies of the birds singing their cheerful songs. How I could feel the crunch of the autumn leaves with each step I took. What the warmth of the sun felt like across my face as I reached the top pf the mountain.
It might not sound like much of a paper to most but to me it was one heck of a descriptive essay. This paper made me feel accomplished and creative.
