Homeschooling has historically been the primary method for educating the average citizen. Before Western civilization began to emphasize the need for education of the general populace, children were most often taught by their parents, grandparents, or relatives with useful knowledge. In fact, the modern idea of formal education was usually reserved for the elite members of society who could pay the hefty price for a private tutor. Now, quality education is readily available to nearly every member of Western society. However, some parents have turned back to the practice of educating their children out of the comfort of their own home. This practice is known as “homeschooling.”…

Middle School. My first steps into the “North Building” and I was terrified. There was moisture in the air and the carpets were moist from being freshly shampooed. It almost smelled like a new house, even though that building was as old as Abraham Lincoln if he were still alive.…

Today was the day. Packed to the point of bursting open with new notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, and textbooks, he readied me for school. Instead of bouncing around as rambunctious young boys do, he trudged slowly in a peculiar meter of half-steps toward the doorway. He was living a new life in a new school that was filled with people who might as well have been aliens to him.…

(More dramatic beginning) Choking and laughing through the cigarette smoke as I sit around the smoking area listening to the seniors tell their crazy drunken stories and cat call at the numerous ladies. This is the dream for any freshmen, but not what I expected when I was thrust into Younglife weekend camp January of my freshmen year.…

Good things happen to those who hustle according to Chuck Noll, but for me hustling has been just another second of failure. It was during the fall of sixth grade when I decided to try out for the school football team.…

In a black Nissan car a girl and her mom sat, supposedly talking, “Mom, I’m going to make a fool of myself, can’t I just go to my old school?” I pleaded my mom. “Don’t say that you’re going to make lots of new friends. Just try in out” my mom replied to my pleading. I had come to west middle after going to a private school for six years and I was very nervous.…

American Imperialism in the Nineteenth Century extended from several characteristics of America and American society, including but not limited to exceptionalism and manifest destiny. While these beliefs not only supported and manifested the perpetual effort to exploit and later completely oppress and subjugate the Native American populations within its borders, they also supported the later establishment of reservations and the practice of Native American boarding school education. But, American Imperialism extended far beyond its ever-expanding territory (Yale, 2008, Avalon Project). Rather, evidence existed in many corners of the world, like Asia, Southeast Asia, and Cuba.…

For a long time it was an activity I could evade with ease. In fact, my creativity was not even challenged until I was well into elementary school. In kindergarten and first “I don’t want to”, was deemed a valid excuse. Naturally second and third graders have absolutely no bladder control, and thus responding to “Alex, how about you read?” with “I gotta pee” had a 100% success rate. By fourth grade I had learned that I could win a free trip to the nurses office by shoving a pencil into my nose and making it bleed, a skill that carried me straight into middle school. Sixth grade was a different world.…

During my first round of practicum, I went to a kindergarten classroom with around 20 to 25 students in the classroom. I went to Miller Elementary and Mrs. Schuchard was my cooperative teacher. I walked in and was immediately placed with students to work with. In the morning the students were working on their daily five and phonics. One thing that I observed that I found very interesting is that the teacher had two rug areas for meetings. When she needed to teach the children for a longer period of time, she would tell them to move over to the other area in order to make them have a brain break and then refocus. It was very interesting to see how effective just a little amount of movement was for these kindergarteners.…

Throughout history the U.S school systems have changed quite a bit. During the 1900s to the 1960s the U.S school system was organized in different categories. Such as, some schools within the U. S were called junior high which was like a mini-version of high school. While other schools across the nation were more like a middle school approach. Nonetheless, a man named William Alexander had a enough and started the middle school movement, he realized along with other educators the need and importance to having a one system approach. For example, by having the one school system approach it open the reality of the truth behind junior high schools. Even though they helped prepare adolescents for high school without putting them in the same building with older teenagers it still delayed developments. While during the 1960s middle school supports argued that sixth-grade students benefitted from being separated from elementary students because it sped up their academic progress.…

To be honest middle school is super stressful. Sometimes you lose your mind and not even notice. I cause myself to malfunction just to chase down my homework. On the other side of this twisted river, I have everything under control. I can explore clubs and groups. Making friends shouldn’t be to hard either. My teachers are amazing. When I step out of the car, I start to feel all kinds of emotions. I was happy that I had finally made it to the infamous “middle school”. I was happy that I had made it to what I thought would be the best years of my life(little did I know they would be some of the worst). I was angry that I had to go to school after a long fun summer. I was also a little worried. Not about the kids or the teachers, but rather that I would fail miserably. Opening my locker was probably the most stressful thing I endured that day. I felt as if I was a safe cracker, trying to crack an uncrackable safe. Somehow, I managed to get it open. Next thing I know teachers and administration were herding all of us 6th graders to the gym. I couldn’t wrap my head around the amount of kids, it seemed to be a never ending mob of 11 year olds.…
