Recess to me means taking a “break” from doing something or taking your mind “off “of something. Many Americans feel as if it shouldn’t be implemented in the school schedule because they are not thinking of the importance of the physical activity that the child is getting during this period of time. Nearly 18% of children age 6-11 are obese in America could, it is because they lack physical activity. Physical activity is important for all people to stay healthy and active. “Sleep deprivation is the most common brain impairment,” a premier sleep scientist, William Dement said. Sleep deprivation is the condition of suffering from a lack of sleep. Recess is a time in which every child in America experienced and enjoyed at one point in their lifetime. Look back to your own childhood: how important was recess and play time to you? Banning recess in elementary schools has been an important topic of debate for most school districts around the country. As stated by the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines recess as ‘regularly scheduled periods within the elementary school day for unstructured physical activity and play’” (Murray and Ramstetter 183). Almost half of all school districts have shifted…

Firstly, there are a plethora of other variables preventing students from adequate sleep. Such examples include an excruciating amount of homework, extra-curricular activities and striving to maintain the Triangle of Health. These additional issues make it even more difficult to get enough sleep. The large amount of homework sometimes has students staying up all hours of the night. Some might argue that if students manage their time efficiently they should be able to go to sleep at a reasonable hour, but even the most organized, intelligent students have trouble completing their huge quantity of homework by the time recommended getting to bed. Next, students are greatly encouraged to participate in after school activities, however, enough sleep is practically impossible to attain when most activities run until five and time is lost to complete work. Finally, students are educated in health class to maintain the Triangle of Health, a diagram representing three crucial elements to being an overall healthy person – physical, mental, and social health. So, students are trying to maintain each form of health by attempting to make time for friends and family, hobbies, at least a half hour of exercise, and stimulation of the…

To begin with, eliminating recess is a good idea because it gives us that extra time to learn. We all know that the halls are crazy because of the limited time we have at our lockers, so we could use that time for lockers, because we all know some of our lockers are pretty small. Kids would have a lot more time to get organized, and so would the teachers. It would help to just eliminate recess and have more time!…

With all the work kids forget about outside and will get caught up in a hot new game or product. With recess not being provided students should get the option to play a sport or do gym all school year. Some middle schools should invest their time in making a new schedule. The schedule should start school a little bit earlier so there is time to fit in a gym class (“Pros and cons of middle school sports”). If a school does not have year round gym classes or recess students might not have anything else to do besides homework.…

It is a chronic condition with severe negative consequences to the developing teenage body and its effects may be even more dire when combined with the stress of heavy schoolwork along with extracurricular activities. Professional doctors advise and recommend growing teenagers to sleep eight hours or more, however this proves to be rather very difficult with the interference of the standard school schedule starting early in the morning. Our children are so important and the idea that our schools don’t see that is a scary thought. Recess has been a way to allow our kids to connect with others socially, build new bonds through similar interest, exercise, and refresh after sitting in a stuffy classroom for so long. Students need recess because just like our muscles need rest time to build after a workout, so do our brains. If we are constantly cramming information in, our brain will become over worked and we will start to experience major health problems in our kids. It is even worse now a day because we have technology to battle with. Students are learning that play time is on an IPad or cell phone. They are losing a very valuable and influential time in their lives.…
