Later Start Time Research Paper
Don’t you ever feel like you are falling asleep in class? School needs to start at a later time so students can get enough sleep each night. Getting enough sleep helps improve grades, lower the rate of car crashes, and lower the use of alcohol and other dangerous drugs. Getting enough sleep is very important for a person's health. Sleep helps maintain a healthy balance of hormones. It also helps improve your memory, spark creativity, sharpen attention, and lower stress. Teenagers are supposed to get around eight to ten hours of sleep each night. Due to excessive amounts of homework, after school activities, and other stressors, students are not getting their recommended amount of sleep. A study found that only 15 percent of teenagers reported …show more content…
That is why I believe that school should have a later start time. "Teenagers are being asked to get up at the wrong time. They are being asked to be in school when their brains are still asleep” (Carskadon). Studies have shown that schools with a start time between eight and eight thirty-five had a sixty-six percent decrease in tardiness. There were also major increases in the grades of first hour classes. A lot of students are not getting their work done at home because they are so tired from the long, busy day of school therefore, their grades are dropping. Schools shouldn’t be making students choose between their grades and their …show more content…
That is because they have a slower reaction time and slower eye movements, which means they are less alert. Schools that have a later start time reduced the number of car accidents by thirteen percent. “Sleep isn't high on a 17-year-old, Jessie A.'s priority list. The Philadelphia teen often goes to bed between 2 and 4 a.m. on school days--largely because there just aren't enough hours in the day for schoolwork, synchronized-swimming practice, and a social life” (Wysong). Studies have shown that someone who has as few hours less of sleep that you are supposed to get, has the same driving characteristics as someone who is considered to be

Teens that do not get enough sleep are much more likely to participate in violent crimes as well as property crimes than teens with good amounts of sleep. Also, when teens get insufficient sleep, they are more likely to smoke, become alcoholics, do drugs, and get into fights at school, which has caused many students to become criminals in the future. If you do not get enough sleep each night, you could suffer from drowsy driving, which is extremely dangerous, and could lead to many deaths due to car crashes. In Wyoming, when Jackson Hole High School shifted its start time almost to 9:00 a.m., the car crashes involving teenage drivers dropped by an astonishing 70%. Later school times allow you to get the sleep that you need to make good decisions, not only for you, but also for…

Therefore, school hours should start later in the day because waking up early in the morning makes students very sleep deprived, decreases academic achievement and health, and because teenage bodies are still growing, it puts off their biological process for sleeping.…

In the article “Our kids need more sleep” Written by Valerie Erde, she makes many good points about why school should be set back to a later time. First is how it increases academic alertness and vigilance. Second, is how a later start time decreases depression in teens and decreases tardiness and decreases truancy. Last, is how this later start time is actually helping the students get better grades. I one hundred percent agree with this and believe these policies should definitely be implemented.…

One reason we should not start school later is because of the lack of time students are left with after school. Coming home to a mountain of homework is a lot of pressure, especially when you must start it late in the afternoon. Justin O’neill from Scholastic Scope article, “Should schools start later?” agrees with this. He says, “Starting school later means dismissing school later. This can interfere with bus schedules, after school activities, and family time” (20). This demonstrates that the amount of time lost in the morning adds up, and it interferes with your personal life. But that is not…

Students ask themselves “why does school have to start so early?” on a daily basis without receiving an answer. Usually, teens find it difficult to fall asleep early and get their 8 hours of sleep, therefore the next day they wake up early, and they're tired all day at school. That is a norm for middle and high school students, and it shouldn’t be. School start times are too early, and need to be change to a later time in order for students to get their full 8 hours of rest.…

In conclusion, I think that middle and high schools shouldn’t start later, because of sports practices being dismissed later because of that school being dismissed later, transportation with car crashes and coming home late will be the main cause of the higher crash rate, and last but not least it will help students perform better both academically and sports wise if they were to stick to their normal sleeping patterns. And if when it comes to choosing between a missing a class for a sports event that was important or just staying in the class and miss an important sports event which one would you…

“42 states reported that most (75%-100%) public schools started before 8:30 a.m” (“Schools Start Too Early”). Most schools start before 8:30. A decent amount of schools start around 7:20. Schools start early in the day and release later in the afternoon. This has become routine, but studies show that students who start early in the day perform worse in school compared to those who start later in the day. Schools should implement a later start time for higher schoolers since high schoolers would get around the recommended amount of sleep, preventing sleeping in school and high schoolers academics and safety will increase, since they will get enough sleep to study before school and prevent drowsiness.…

There are many health benefits for a later start time. "Less than one third of U.S. students, however, are sleeping at least 8 hours on school nights and four hours out of five middle and high schools start their day before 8:30 a.m. A consensus has emerged among health experts that this is simply too early," (neatoday.org). This evidence proves that the school start times can change the health of students. "Drowsy driving increases for our newest drivers. Teens released in the early afternoon (sometimes well before 2 p.m!) have hours of unsupervised time until the typical adult work day ends. Sleep deprivation increases risk-taking behavior, substance abuse, and impedes judgment and decision-making…

Children and teens need more sleep, but school starts so early they do not get that sleep. However some people think they should not start later in the day. One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…

Sleep deprivation is a common struggle many adolescents confront daily in their lives. It is a chronic condition with severe negative consequences to the developing teenage body and its effects may be even more dire when combined with the stress of heavy schoolwork along with extracurricular activities. Professional doctors advise and recommend growing teenagers to sleep eight hours or more, however this proves to be rather very difficult with the interference of the standard school schedule starting early in the morning. Starting school at a later time may highly reduce the negative effects of sleep deprivation and possibly improve the conditions of students.…

First of all, according to sleepingresources.com, “When teens have an early start time and are driving to school in the morning while being tired, they are at a bigger risk for a traffic accident.” This is because when teens are driving and are tired their reaction times are slower. Secondly, tired drivers from early start times isn’t just affecting teens but also the parents who drive their teens to school. According to sleeping resources.com, “drowsiness contributes to over 100,000 car crashes per year.” So when a parent wakes up early to take their child to school they are tired and more at risk to get in a car crash causing them and their child to be in danger. Also, having a later start time for middle schoolers would lower the injuries that happen to the school’s athletes. This is because a tired athlete would be drowsy and have a later reaction time which could put them at higher risk for an injury. So, overall by making middle school start times later students will be much safer and will be at a lower risk for car accidents and injuries during the…
