Why School Should Start Later
Introduction-
Sara mckibben stated to the Start Schools Later Healthy Hours article, that more than 82.2% of U.S. middle, high, and combined public school require students to attend classes at times earlier than recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Children and teens need more sleep, but school starts so early they do not get that sleep. However some people think they should not start later in the day. Schools should start later in the day because children and teens need more sleep and teen car crashes happen more when teens are tired and have to go to school.

Body Paragraph 1- Children and teens need more sleep. For instance, “Middle and high schools should start no earlier than 8:00 am. Doctors say that starting school earlier in the morning prevents children and teens from getting a full night of sleep” (Macmillan 1). This evidence proves that schools should start later because children and teens need more sleep. Additionally, “The ACSM recommends that a teenager should sleep 8 to 10 hours a night but according to the CDC, almost 70% of high-school students report sleeping 7 hours or less on a regular basis” (Macmillan 2). For example, “In the study drivers ages 17 to 24 who reported sleeping 7 or fewer hours per night were about 20% more likely to be involved in a car crash” (Rettner 1). Based on this evidence we know that schools should start later because it will give more time for teens to sleep and when they have to drive they will be awake. Also, “Drivers who reported getting 7 or fewer hours of sleep per night, 9.4% were involved in a car crash. Compared with 6.9% of those who reported more than 7 hours of sleep per night” (Rettner 1). This concludes that less sleep can cause more car crashes because teens don’t go to sleep until about 10:30 or 11:00 pm, and most of the time they have to get up early in the morning to go to school when they are
