What would it be like if a student can sleep in during the week for school, almost getting as much sleep as you would like? Waking up so early for school disturbs the students’ ability to concentrate during the day. Sometimes students even fall asleep during class. School start times need to be changed to a later time: students need more sleep to be more focused in school, teenagers attitudes and incidents worsen when woken up too early, and students grades increase in percent when getting more sleep.
Will changing school times help kids be more focused?
No one can argue that getting up for school is a hassle and very tiring. “The American Academy of Pediatrics supports pushing back start times for older kids, particularly …show more content…
In that manner, it is true. “A National Sleep Foundation Poll showed that 59 percent of middle-school students and 87 percent of high-school students are getting less than the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep a night that they need for their physical and mental health”(Hungelmann). So, that meaning that students can’t focus in school so much because they are tired. “Students at later starting schools get more sleep, perform better academically”(“The Impact” 1). Parents love to see their children doing very well in school. But, getting up so early just doesn’t seem very fun and and easy to do so. Scientific research affirms that grades perform better when woken up later. Researchers state teens getting more sleep do better academically, with better standardized test scores and better quality of life(Shute). Many percentages differ when teens getting more sleep(see figure 1). Because of all the evidence and reasons that school should start later, the government needs to put in action and make a change right away. Many statistics would change if so. Students’ academics would increase in percent, students’ would get involved in school more, and bad incidents would decrease by far. However, the opposite side of this argument is against it because they don’t know all the qualities and facts coming from it. It’s time for school start times to be
