I have read excerpts from two texts. An informational text titled ‘The Sea Around Us’ by Rachel Carson, and a literature text titled ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’, by Jules Verne. In both excerpts there are many descriptions of the ocean. Many people debate whether details are described more vividly in informational text, or in literature. I feel the ocean was described more vividly in the excerpt from the literature text ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’.…

Viktor Frankl’s book, “Mans Search for Meaning,” has an abundance of despair, loss, and chances to become bitter, however, Frankl turns those potential feelings around and makes them into an experience, one he can learn from. It is similar to the saying “learn from your mistakes.” Frankl experiences the worst of the worst, and he learns something magnificent. This is not a story about the horrible things that happened to him in the Nazi camp, but one about his search for meaning.…

Inventions have shaped the growth of civilization since the beginning of time, but can an invention actually do more harm than good? Who is at fault? Should those who came up with the ideas be to blame? In answer to the first question, yes. Take gunpowder as an example; gunpowder was first used in China for entertainment, such as fireworks (Pyro universe, History of fireworks). However, when the invention went into the wrong hands, it became a weapon, which made it do more harm than good. It is not those who came up with the idea who are to blame, it is the people that use it in a deleterious way in human society.…

The person whom I admire most is my mom, -. She has been my rock for as long as I have been alive. My mom has raised me to be a respectful, mature, caring, and hardworking individual. She healed the boo-boos I suffered as a young child, guided me through the awkwardness of puberty, and softened the heartache and disappointment that come with adolescence. My mom is the hardest worker I know. While taking care of three children despite her multiple sclerosis, my mom went to college and maintained a 4.0 GPA. She is also the kindest person I have ever met. If my mom knew of anyone who didn’t have enough food, she would literally get food out of our cabinets to feed them. Lastly, she is the smartest person—academically as well as commonsense-wise—I have ever met. Over the years my mom has talked me out of many bad decisions, such as bell-bottom jeans and blue eye-shadow, and coached me to make good choices, such as charity work and taking college classes in high school. Because my mom has passed along so much of her wisdom to me, I will be better able to contribute to society than I would have been without her example.…

Growing up in a small town wasn't always easy for me. I felt that I was constantly hiding and denying the person that I was and the life that I lived. I was forced to be someone that I really wasn't due to the fact that I had a "family secret" that I was withholding in order to protect the well-known, family name, Hutcherson. In highschool, no one but family members and close friends knew that I lived with an alcoholic father. As a child I was always taught to keep our family life secret and never let people know the struggles that our family faced. People always thought that I had the best of everything because of the material possessions I accumulated from my dad. They assumed that because our family had money, we were problem free - and oh, how wrong they were! It was until my senior year at Halls High School that I kept leading people on to believe a lie. I finally got tired of feeling as though I was two different people with two different lives.…
