My Nursing Philosophy

Nursing is my profession of choice. I am a firm believer in the dignity of man, the sanctity of life and being compassionate to people irrespective of their social, economic or cultural backgrounds. I belief that a person is a holistic being made up of biological, psychological, sociological and spiritual components that are in constant interaction with the environment (Fulton, et al, 2014). The environment is the total of human experiences, and it incorporates both internal and external components.

My philosophy acknowledges that the interaction between the environment and patience determines the health outcomes. In this case, culture, gender, spirituality and age among other factors are part of the patient and should be respected to promote their health. However, due to differences in belief systems, emergence of ethical dilemmas is inevitable. This would arise when the patients’ cultural beliefs contradict with the best care nursing practices and nursing profession ethics, which could undermine attainment of anticipated health outcomes. Under such circumstances, my philosophy allows the nurse to assist such patients clarify their own values to reach informed decisions.
My philosophy of respecting human dignity and respect for human life considers the various social, economic and environmental factors that put certain genders, groups of people and children at a disadvantage in accessing quality health care. Under such circumstances, my philosophy allows the nurse to take the role of health educator, health advocate and counselor to ensure that the affected groups attain the expected health outcomes.
My personal philosophy reinforces the existing nursing theories, because it borrows heavily from Jean Watson theory of Human Caring. The main defining elements of my philosophy are respect for life and dignity of every person. This implies that the theory takes into consideration the various physical, spiritual and environmental needs required by patients to attain the anticipated health outcomes.
