In such as case, I would respect the different culture and serve the patients with dignity and compassion. My philosophy acknowledges that the interaction between the environment and patience determines the health outcomes. In this case, culture, gender, spirituality and age among other factors are part of the patient and should be respected to promote their health. However, due to differences in belief systems, emergence of ethical dilemmas is inevitable. This would arise when the patients’ cultural beliefs contradict with the best care nursing practices and nursing profession ethics, which could undermine attainment of anticipated health outcomes. Under such circumstances, my philosophy allows the nurse to assist such patients clarify their own values to reach informed decisions.
