I believe in offering each and every child as well as their family and whānau a safe, fun, challenging and nurturing educational environment where they are able to grow and follow their interests in a positive and empowering manner.
I believe that all children should be empowered to achieve their personal best across all areas of the early childhood curriculum, regardless of their background, gender or culture. As a teacher, I wish to engage with children in a constructive and encouraging way that supports and builds upon their interests and to find new ways to challenge and excite them.
I believe in including the family of the child as well as the wider community in learning experiences so that the children know they have a place in the world where their links with their family and local community are acknowledged and supported (Ministry of Education, 1996).
I believe the role of the teacher in the early childhood environment is to not explicitly teach as is done in other levels of schooling, but to guide and support children as they are led by their own interests and encourage them to experiment and explore new ideas where they wish.
Although the RIE philosophy of Respect is directly related to working with infants, I consider their ideas to be ones that should be applied to children of all ages. I believe relationships with children should be built around respect. By respecting children’s ideas and beliefs I communicate to them that they are valued which aids in building trust and self-esteem as well as positive relationships (Christie, 2011).
I believe in maintaining appropriate documentation of children’s learning to track progress and achievement, that can be shared with the child and their family, and where possible, collaborate with the child so they play an important part in the documentation of their learning.
I want to be a teacher who is well organized and is willing to learn
