I am ashamed to say that even in my country, South Korea, I don’t like reading books. Since I was young, in my free time I’ve usually enjoyed outdoor activities rather than indoor activities like reading books. For this reason, it is probably a natural result that I’m not good at reading. Then, how can I improve my reading skills? Through this assignment, I’ll find my problems, my strong points and weak points about my reading. I analyzed my reading history including problems and good points to figure out solutions.
First of all, although I read only a couple of books a year, I believe my strength in reading is repeating the same books over and over. For example, I’ve read my favorite book more than 100 times so far. Even though I know the whole stories, every time I read the same book, I can find new things that I could not recognize last time, which makes me understand the story better. Secondly, I think my weak point in reading is my low reading speed. This is because I’m not familiar with reading long sentences. So, it takes longer time for me to read a whole book than others. For example, assume that I read a book for one hour per one day, it will take about five days to read the whole book. That is, I can read only few books in a limited period of time. Third, I often feel like an “outsider” when people talk about something that I’m not interested in. A lot of diverse information came from various reading materials such as books, magazines, newspapers, internet, etc. But I always accept the information which attracts my interest. So, whenever people talk about something I don’t know, I cannot take part in the conversation and it makes me feel stupid and incapable. Last but not least, whenever my friends ask me something that I know well and my answer satisfies their curiosities, I feel like an “insider” to reading. To be specific, I don’t like read general books such as novels, nonfictions which have stories, but I enjoy reading
