My Rhetorical Modes

Rhetorical, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is “Of, relating to, or concerned with the art of speaking or writing formally and effectively especially as a way to persuade or influence people.” The definition is an accurate one and explains what it is often used for: to persuade or influence another. When I first learned rhetoric, I associated the technique with three Rhetorical modes. These were Logos, an appeal to logic, Ethos, an appeal to ethics and lastly, Pathos which is an appeal to emotions. From what I first learned (and have continued to learn), an effective argument should include all of the three. However, by taking this class, I have grown to learn that there is much more to accomplish with rhetoric than just those
three terms. While you can relate back to those modes, those are the roots and your argument should have several other branches to support it. Diction and style play a very important role in composing your reason. Depending on your word choice and how you phrase your argument will help the audience understand the objective in cooperated in your message. Another tip of rhetoric is to know your audience. This can also relate back to diction because you should use appropriate articulation so it doesn’t go over the audience’s head. This could help appeal to the rhetorical modes of ethos and pathos. While in this class, we’ve begun to learn the tip of the iceberg of rhetorical analysis, I expect that well will learn and hopefully master the other 90% as the year continues.
