My Rhetorical Modes
Rhetorical, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is “Of, relating to, or concerned with the art of speaking or writing formally and effectively especially as a way to persuade or influence people.” The definition is an accurate one and explains what it is often used for: to persuade or influence another. However, by taking this class, I have grown to learn that there is much more to accomplish with rhetoric than just those

Rhetorical appeals are the different ways a writer can influence the reader. They can be influenced with emotion, logic, and experience. Pathos, ethos, and logos can each be use throughout a piece of writing to convey a specific purpose. Logos uses logic and reason to convince the reader by supporting a topic with solid facts. Without using logos, much of what would be written would seem false and more like and opinion. Using ethos is a tactic a writer may use to give a sense of experience on his/her topic and to give enough credentials to seem believable. Pathos however, uses less credibility, but emotion to sway the reader’s opinion. If all of the rhetorical appeals are blended together correctly, a great piece of writing can be the…

There are many different tactics that a rhetorician can use for the effectiveness of persuasion. Gorgias declares that trickery is a bad use of rhetoric. Rhetoricians should not use trickery in order to convince someone of something. Instead, they should speak the truth and have evidence for their facts. He states "those who have persuaded and do persuade anyone about anything are shapers of lying discourse". Also, rhetoricians should describe the argument at hand to make sure that both sides understand what exactly the argument is about. However, it might be difficult if one beliefs if they are peaking the truth yet they are speaking fallacies.…

This semester my writing saw both the best of times, and the worst of times. My worst piece of writing is most definitely the first FRQ essay, which was a rhetorical analysis of one of the Onion’s articles. I have never held the most strength in rhetorical analysis. In years past when I would analyze the diction or syntax of an essay, I would experience immense difficulty. It was no different when it came to the first FRQ. I floundered, like a fish out of water, desperately searching for sentences I could analyze, words that I could pick apart. For me, the trouble with rhetorical analysis is that it is so focused on the small details. When I read anything, whether it be a book or an essay, I read the work as a whole. I never pay that much attention to the author’s word choice or the lengths of their sentences. To have to write about a subject that I don’t know much about, or pay much attention to, is always a struggle.…

Every day we converse with friends, family members, and professionals in distinctly differently manners, especially when we are trying to persuade them of something. Through experience, I have learned which rhetorical strategies are most successful and integrated them into a fictional attempt to obtain $500 for textbooks from three people after depleting my funds. I varied the degree of formality in my register and tone, incorporated emotional appeal, and altered my level of transparency and the extent of my honesty toward each person to accomplish this task.…
