My Service Learning Experience
Learning is supposed to be more than just the stereotypical perception of sitting in a classroom and getting lectured by the professor. Going into my First Year Seminar class I honestly did not know what to expect. I was initially nervous that this class was going to forcibly push me out of my comfort zone, and it did, but in a way that was exciting and comfortable for me. One of the reasons why I enjoy this class is because you never know what you are going to expect. There is never a day where you do not learn something new, whether it is educational related or discussing a topic that pertains to our life experiences. I honestly enjoy the connection between the class and the professor. I love how our class lessons are taught in a more hands-on aspect because I learn better that way. Throughout the semester, my overall learning experience was broken down into four categories: course learning experience, service learning experience, my Type Focus assessment results, and the profile of my chosen major and career. These all exemplify what I learned from being in this class, my educational goals, and my overall experience as a student at North …show more content…
My overall freshman experience was very different in comparison to my 1st semester. I originally enrolled at North Carolina Central University in the Fall of 2014. So coming back was bittersweet because I was already familiar with the basics of living on campus and the structure of classes, but I still had to get use to the changes of being in college again. I am thankful that I have a strong support system because it makes the challenges you face in college a lot easier. Some of the struggles you may face financially was thankfully taken care of by my family, so I would not have to get a job and have that interfere with my schoolwork. I also have friends who help keep me on track. They definitely are an important factor when it comes to my college

Freshman year is a tough year. For most, it is a life changing experience that detaches you from your childhood. Being away from home, getting over the high school girlfriend, and just the overall experience can be very hard to adjust to. Friendships take work and time. Finding where you belong will not happen overnight, and that's completely normal. Depending on what college you go to, you might feel some pressure to drink.…

I am in my first semester of college this year. I am the first person in my family to attend college. I am very proud of myself. I don’t know if I would be here today if it weren’t for some of the people in my life. Looking back now I will have to say the three biggest influences were my kids who I want better for, my best friend who has believed in me even when I wasn’t sure of myself, and my step dad who has always encouraged me to further my education.…

When I first started my college education, I never would have thought that I would be where I am today. I transferred over to Temple University the spring semester of my freshmen year of college. I remember how frustrating those first couple month were for me as a college freshman. I had to adjust to a lot of new changes such as, a new campus, new people, new courses etc. I struggled a lot that semester but made through it with the help of the great professors and advisor. There were always great resources available to me no matter what needed. From then on I learned to manage my time and I knew how much work I had to put in to reach my goals. The next three undergraduate years were tough due to the rigorous coursework but I was able to…

The reality of my college experience is just the way I felt it would be, tons of work, tons of traveling and working to the division, can be overwhelming, Being in college gives me a since of independence and future entitlement in my career. I worked hard to get where I am and strived hard enough to be here. I take school seriously, I can play later, I get days off, that’s my spare time, I give in all my work, quality work, on time, all the time. Everything in college I’ve experienced I expected. In my high school years, my classmates and I went on a few tours to big campus colleges, Mercy college campus was my favorite and first choice, until I saw the tuition fee/long term dept. I am currently completing my service learning at Martin Luther King Elementary School working with children ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade in an after school program. This program provides the children with a safe and comforting place to do their homework, hangout with their friends, and get a snack. Since I am just getting to know these children I do not know everything about them and their background, so I do not have a lot of examples that relate back to the class work we do. In class I feel as if a lot of the material we focus on relates back to the parents, home life, and how they have been raised thus far. I only see them once a week, so I cannot make judgments regarding their course of development and influences that have left impacts on their life. The two examples that I have noticed that we have covered in class include Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory and The Ecological Systems Theory. I have noticed elements of the Sociocultural Theory in the children’s dialogue. Considering their age the children have a very advanced dialogue with rather colorful language. Personally, I was not even familiar with some of these words that Kindergarteners and 1st graders are expressing. I think this has to do with the culture they were raised and possibly the community. I think that the Kindergarteners at the school pick up on language that is used by the older kids and then they start to say it. Although teachers and administrators try their best to stop the kids from using bad language and reprimanding them when they do I feel as if the colorful language they have come to know is forever imbedded in their brain. I think the Ecological Systems Theory plays a big role in understanding these children and the school I am working at. For me it was rather different to go into a school like this in a bad neighborhood and see children behaving in ways that I had never seen before. However, for the teachers that work there are so used to it they don’t even…

Service learning is a valuable way for students to engage with their communities. When tasked to incorporate a service learning activity into my English class I was faced with a few difficulties. Language Arts standards are very complex and cover many different areas including: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Service learning lends itself readily to the speaking and listening areas, however, I decided that I would attempt to build a unit that enriches student learning in all four domains of the English/Language Arts curricula. The following unit, which I titled the “Changemaker Unit,” is the result of this process.…

In a society where individuals are interconnected like never before through the use of social media, it is still all too easy to forget about others who struggle every day from the impact of bullying. People, most often school-aged students, suffer in silence as they are relentlessly tormented, with seemingly no helping hand in sight. This issue, which is all too common in educational settings, was what I chose to focus on throughout my service learning experience in both my observations and my activities. Bullying in any of its forms, whether it be sexual harassment, cyberbullying, or its “traditional” manifestation of generalized harassment, relates directly to the topic of health and one’s physical and mental wellbeing. The impacts of bullying…

In the essay, “College Lectures: Is anybody Listening?,” written by David Daniels, he suggests that college lecture classes should be replaced by classes that provide more of an active learning environment. He also points out that the lecture system is outdated, because it originated from the fact that, formerly, people couldn’t afford to buy books. He explains how the large number of students in one lecture hall makes student-instructor interaction more difficult than it should be. He illustrates how this is particularly true for students attending college in their first year, because those students are not yet equipped with the tools to succeed in a lecture style course. He feels that this is the time when students need to be nurtured and have a more hands on experience in order to learn effectively. He talks about how the students become bored during lectures, not paying attention, and drifting off into space. Based on my own experience and observations, I agree with Daniels.…
