MY SHINING MOMENT
NAME: SAMUEL OLATUNDE ADEFOWOKAN
COURSE: READING 096
SECTION: SEC 096
TOPIC: MY SHINING MOMENT (WON A SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP)
DATE: 17 NOVEMBER, 2014

My shining moment was one of the most memorable days of my life when I helped my team to win the Inter-school Soccer Championship. It was also an awesome day for my school. Many dignitaries such as the Mayor came because it was such a big event in the county. The atmosphere was great; the crowd was wild, cheering, whistling, blowing trumpets, and playing music. The match started with the opponents scoring two first half goals, the score line was even by me scoring two goals, laid up the assist for the third, and we won the championship. To begin with, this shining moment started at 9:00 am. My teammates and I went to the locker room to have a pre-match meeting with the Coach where we discussed about the starting formation, the starting eleven, and substitutes. Next, the team went to the training field to do some light workouts and tactics for an hour. Then we went back to the locker room and the coach gave us a motivational speech, also asked me to be the captain and talked to us about the popularity, the physical and mental strength of our opponents and we all went to our respective classes. By 12:00 noon, the bell rang and a loud noise erupted throughout the whole school because the time had come to go and cheer the soccer team. Also, the atmosphere was electrifying and I felt motivated and excited to do my best and bring the trophy back home. Next the team stood beside the school bus and got supporting handshakes from the proprietress. Eventually, we got into the buses with whole team and the entire school and we sang, played music, and chatted as we went to the stadium. When we got to the stadium, it was loud and packed, the parking lot was filled even some cars couldn’t find parking spots. Then, we went off the bus and went to the locker room; we changed and went to the field and set ourselves in the

Quite possibly the most significant time of my life was during my senior year as part of the Edison High School football team. The story of our 2006 season is a reflection of my life and testimony to my beliefs and values. Underdogs from day one, we represented not only our school, but also our community and families. Early expectations of the 2006 Eagles were low and the surrounding community was under the belief that Edison would be lucky to go 6-4 with the inexperienced players and the loss of such a talented senior class. Suddenly, I was starting as the outside linebacker/defensive end for the first time in my career along with 18 brand new starters. Unexpectedly, a green group of replacements were 5-0, half-way through our season. After…

And to finish up that inning we just got a couple ground balls and we turned a double play. And for the next few innings nothing really happened both teams were struggling to hit. Now it's like the 5th inning and we have the top of our hitting order up so we had:Liam,Luke,Ryan,Alex as our 1,2,3,4 hitters. And we got a rally going and we scored a couple runs so at this point the score is 5-1 and we have the lead so then I go into the 6th inning to pitch and I can only do ⅔ of the inning so than Ryan comes in and pitches and to finish out the 7th Alex pitches a 3 strikeout inning. So the game was over and the presedent of the league gave me the game ball to keep and bring home and everyone on our team got a trophy to take home after we won we were all so happy that we won the championship because it was or a lot of people the first time they won something. The…

As I was in the truck with three other of my teammates, I was terrified and nervous. I had butterflies in my stomach. I was overwhelmed. When I heard that we only had eight players exactly, my heart dropped. This is because the exact amount of players that could be on the field is eight I was also sweating. I literally felt like giving up and not even play. My brother, Alvaro, and Gilberto were in the truck as well. They were all nervous as well, but they didn't give up. As I gazed out the window, I saw the sign "Fitzgerald Fields."…

I stood up and walked down the stairs to the court. The team and I went to the locker room like we always do at the end of the third quarter of the girl’s varsity game. Our opponent? I had scored a multitude of times that game, and felt extremely accomplished. The whole team received championship trophies and celebrated. That is the old trophy that still sits on my desk. Looking back, I wouldn’t necessarily say that winning a second grade flag football championship was my biggest accomplishment, but that one trophy led to six more years of football, my interest in lacrosse, and everything in between. And every time I look at that trophy, not only do I remember that day in second grade, but I gain a sense of perseverance and determination for the things to come in my…

My club soccer team sat in the same Taco Mac to watch every game the national team played in that 2011 World Cup. As most of us were just starting high school that summer, we could relate to Morgan. I was a rising freshmen and being the youngest in the school trying out for a varsity sport is always hard. Once I received news I was on the Varsity soccer team I was excited but I knew that was only the beginning. I would be starting center mid with two other seniors who had experience and been on the team for three years. The season was tough after losing in the first round of the state playoffs but in the end I scored 13 goals for the team my freshmen year. Alex Morgan’s effort really pushed me that season. I kept reminding myself of her accomplishments and how I could easily reach some of my own.…

As I pulled my hat on, a deluge of panic rushed over me. Suddenly, I felt like I was going to have an anxiety attack. I couldn’t have one - not after I’d worked so hard on controlling it. But as we lined up at the end zone, I knew I’d be okay. One last run through, one last push. With chins up and eyes wide with pride, we marched onto the football field, our hearts pounding, to our opening positions. I listened as the crowd cheered for us and the drum major, the leader and conductor of the band, saluted to express the band was ready. I performed my heart out, hitting every position, playing every note with all of my passion. Within nine fleeting minutes, we struck that last impact with everything we had and snapped our horns down, then hustled…

It was an amazing time and i was imagining me in the hall of fame and being one of the best baseball players ever. We get back to our dorm and we find out we are going to face. It was the best team in California and they were projected to win the whole tournament. We were all so nervous and trying to focus. We ended up winning the game 5 to 4 with me hitting 2 homeruns. We were onto the championship game. It was view online by thousands of people and everybody was watching us. It was the most nervous I have even been for a game. A lot of people were watching us and everybody was trying to stay calm and act like nobody's watching. That calmed everybody down. It was the 7th inning and it was a tie game. We were up to bat against a pitcher that was throwing 80 miles per hour. Our lead off hitter got on base with a walk. The next hitter got hit by the pitch. He got a base hit and the bases were loaded with no outs. I was up to bat and I was very nervous and was thinking not to try too hard and try to get a hit. My coach called me over and said “ Don’t be nervous, it’s just like a normal at bat, you don’t need be overly anxious and try to be a hero.” That helped me out a lot, I was calm and was trying to do nothing special. I swing and miss at the first pitch. The second was a ball outside, it was a 1-1 count. The next pitch was a fastball right down the middle. I took my hardest swing I could and I hit the ball right on the…

I was 9 years old on a soccer team in a school called Brightwood. We have a soccer game every Thursday and Brightwood was going against a school called Truesdell. I was warming up for the game and our coach was giving a speech about our tactics for winning the game and not losing focus of the game. My coach said “today is not the day to be a star, but to play as one”. Most of the players weren't focused on my coach's speech. I heard what the coach had said, but I had my own plans, I felt excited l that this will be the game I can prove that I am a someone.…

I made the team my junior year. Although I did not start the first games because the coach would put some of his favorite players in but one game he put me in second half and no one would get pass me. I was taking all the all the balls away from the opponents and also winning them in the air. After that game I became the starter for every game. It felt good because there were only seven juniors on the team and I was one out of three juniors that started every game. But I was really clad for myself because all the hard work I did over the summer paid off. We were in a tournament and were playing to go to the finals. We won 7 -1. I scored my first goal in that game. When I thought everything was going good one of the opponent player slide and hit me in the knee with his cleats and I just fell and I could not walk because it was the worst pain in the…
