My Shoeless-Ness Behavior
Walking around barefoot did not contradict or disrupt my presentation in a way which halted my ability to perform daily functions. I was not stopped, harassed, laughed at, or demeaned. Of course my behavior was impressed within pre-existing interactions and relationships within a community. I am a young, white, female college co-ed. I dress like I come from an upper-middle class family: and I do. The result is that the chances of my shoeless-ness being interpreted as a sign of poverty or vagrancy was next to nil. Given my identity and status, I would likely have been safe (but very uncomfortable) walking around the Rice campus naked.
General reactions to my shoeless-ness were constant among students, professors, and staff. Consistently, I

Although students do not lose their rights as they walk through the school gates, their rights are restricted for the safety of others. The court case of Tinker v. Des Moines argues the same issue of the rights of students while on school grounds. “Because the appearance of the armbands distracted students from their work, they detracted from the ability of the school officials to perform their duties, so the school district was well within its rights to discipline the students” (OYEZ). As the armbands distracted students, the inappropriate photos of Suzie distracted upperclassmen from their educational work, which also put Suzie in an uncomfortable position depriving herself the ability to focus 100% on school work. Therefore, the principal was taking away a distraction to discipline the students which can be compared to the case of Tinker v. Des…

The one instance in which we didn’t get a response was when two upperclassmen guys followed behind us and said they didn’t care if they got in trouble or not- they were not going to take off their shoes to go in the library! I had to give them credit for not going along with us. Everyone that did take off their shoes said that they were really confused and knew that this might be some sort of joke but they still did it anyways just because two or three people did it with no shame first. Call it peer pressure or whatever you want, but the power of conformity certainly proved itself powerful at our college campus, which is exactly what I…

Also, clothing is a huge part of ones identity since people are defined who they are by what they wear. Normally, people would not think a man in suit and tie could be a mugger, killer or rapist. In page 117, paragraph 8, Staples said he had a very bad experience. He get into a office building in rush to turn in a deadline story to his editor and the security thought he is a burglar since he did not wear suit and tie, instead, he wore T-shirt and jeans. Personally, I had a very similar experience about clothing. I have two different jobs, one in office and one delivering pizza. One day, right after I got off from my office and then I went to delivery pizza. Since I didn't change my nice cloth, three black guys thought I was rich and robbed me with a gun. I was so scared to dead and I swore I wouldn't wear any nice cloth if I have to walk at night and special in west…

Wearing shoes is something practically everybody assumes when they go for a jog, a workout, or a race. The modern running shoe wasn’t invented until 1970 (Lieberman 531). So what did people do when the modern running shoe wasn’t around? More and more people have been asking themselves this very question.…

How would you feel if you weren’t allowed to express the way you felt at all? Better yet, how would you feel if your education was being disturbed because of your clothes? Many girls all over the United States are taken out of their class to change their clothes because they are “too revealing.” This is something that girls all over the country have to deal with this, but girls at our school also have to deal with it. The dress code at Lincolnview is unfair because the rules are ridiculous, it is unfair/sexist, and students cannot express themselves.…

The purpose of the dress code is to have a better understanding that students do not come here to show off their style, but to come here to learn and get a better education. Students fail to realize the difference between dressing for success and dressing to impress. Dress code is nothing new to our society; many jobs require you to wear certain types of clothing or a uniform. Therefore, these schools are simply preparing their students to have a successful and bright future. Students should be more concerned about what they can learn, not what they can or cannot wear. Education is what motivates student’s people to the top of the platform their wardrobe. “Be careless in your dress if you will, but keep a tidy soul (Twain)”. Students should beware, their future will not depend on…

In the article, “Student says she was forced to wear an embarrassing outfit after violating the dress code.” written by Rebecca Klein, talks about the unfair dress code policy and the embarrassing punishment that follows. Miranda Larkin, 15, was wearing a skirt that was past her fingertips and just above her knees. She was told that her skirt was ‘too short’ and was sent to the office to change into a school-provided outfit. This outfit was a big, bright yellow t-shirt and red baggy sweatpants that was labeled “Dress Code Violation”. Instantly, Miranda started to bawl and broke out into hives all over her neck-she had to walk around in those clothes for the rest of the day until her mother picked her up from school.…

On the other hand, according to researchers from Sam Houston University conducted by Jimmy Creel and Angela Stallings about the dress code effect on students’ learning achievement. They showed that there’s no correlation between dress code and students’ academic achievement in school. Creel and Stallings conducted students with school appropriate clothing while taking their Texas Assessment test and they conclude, “Our studies suggested that the implementation of a standardized test dress code had no significant impact on the improvement of TAAS scores among the targeted population” (Creel and Stallings, 4). They also found that allowing students to express themselves can create “Unity and pride” (Stallings,…

To deliver my judgement on how students should dress, I spent my time studying an article that was written by Kneia Dacosta and was from the Journal of Negro Education. The article was called "Dress Codes Blues: an Exploration of Urban Students' Reactions to a Public High School Uniform Policy." and the authors of the article performed an interview study on 22 African American magnet high school students who attended a school with a uniform policy and focused on asking student what they thought about their uniform policy and how they reacted to it. The results were shocking. 75% of the students were opposed to the policy. Out of the 75% who opposed the policy, 56% if the students opposed the policy because it restricted their freedom, 25% said they opposed it because of the price of the uniform, and 19% opposed the uniform because they thought it was pointless. The uniforms were pointless to them because as soon as school was over violence would incite and even with…

Dress codes are rules that the country has utilized for years. But are these rules necessary? They often suppress students’ individuality as well as students’ self-expression. At the same time these rules also discriminate and needlessly sexualize young women. Dress codes were put in place to establish a distraction-free environment for students. And yet, they are doing the opposite, and thus, modifying or eliminating them would be most logical.…

    Dressing Out of Context

There was more then one level of context affecting how my dress was interpreted. I was in different elements and surrounding situations. When I was at home it was less of a big deal because I was comfortable in that surrounding. When I went shopping at Meijer’s it changed because complete strangers that had nothing but judgment and giggles behind my back surrounded me. It was less uncomfortable then when I went to study at Biggby’s coffee shop. Meijer’s was still uncomfortable but some people were dressed down there. At the coffee shop it is a little place and people are closely together. Therefore I had to be seen by everyone and for a good amount of time.…
