I believe that my strengths are that when I am given a topic that sparks my interest, I enjoy researching and writing about said topic. It’s not hard for me to write about something I enjoy learning more about. If I am passionate about a certain topic, it shows in my writing. The reason I believe this is true is because in the past, any writing tasks I have been assigned that I enjoyed writing, I have received, in my eyes, good grades on said tasks. I also, overall, just have an easier time writing about things …show more content…
I enjoy learning more about.
On the other hand, if I am assigned a writing task that doesn’t spark much interest, I have a hard time finding things to write about on the topic, because if nothing seems very compelling to me, I don’t always know where to start.
Once I get started on writing something that doesn’t hold my interest, I can’t always keep my ideas going, and this is a problem because it’s hard to meet the required length if I can’t keep the words flowing. I generally have a harder time with these assignments overall, because of how much longer I spent thinking about what to write, and just not enjoying writing about a topic that doesn’t engage my interest. Although I do not remember the exact words or occasions (honestly, I haven’t written many essays since I graduated two years ago, or even during my two years at a different University, surprisingly enough), I tend to not get as good of a grade on these kinds of tasks compared to something I enjoyed writing about. Another weakness I have, and I’m sure everyone has this problem, is sometimes, regardless if I enjoy what I’m writing about or not, I get a serious case of writer's block. When this happens, sometimes I just start trying to write things to fill space, and place this nonsense in places that don’t always make
sense.
As I stated before, I have not written many essays since I graduated, or in my two years at UNB, so I don’t really remember exact feedback I have received in the past. In respect to feedback that would most help me improve my writing skills during this course, I would say that what would help me the most would to not just write down that something is wrong, doesn’t make sense, or that it could be improved. I value feedback that tells me how I would start to fix these mistakes, or at least points me in the right direction.
In conclusion, writing has always, and will always, have it’s up and downs for me. I will always struggle with something, but if I can find an aspect of the assigned subject that will spark and hold my interest, the words will always flow much easier.
