The world is changing in many ways and so are the new generations. It is very important to know how to raise children. Throughout the semester I was asked to raise a baby, whom I named Kyle. He was always a cautious and unpredictable child. When Kyle was younger and he was aggressive and it was difficult to calm him down. As he grew older, he was not as aggressive and his language, motor and cognitive skills greatly expanded. While raising Kyle, I tried not to be controlling because I knew that Kyle was of aware of right from wrong. He argued with me about his bedtime, chores, curfew, clothing choices and more. Around the age sixteen, Kyle got matching tattoos with his girlfriend, started smoking marijuana, drinking, and sneaking out with his friends. At the age of seventeen, Kyle began hanging with the “druggie” crowd. One day when he was hanging out with the “druggie” crowd, a police pulled them over and arrested them for drug possession. Kyle received a first-degree misdemeanor charge, attended a rehab and drug education program, and attended a community service program for six months. He had to drop out of high school and finish when his rehab and community service programs were over. When I noticed that Kyle’s grades started slipping and that he was becoming more disrespectful, I attempted to punish him but he would always find a way to be sneaky. I never wanted to be the strict and overprotective parent, so I let Kyle learn from all of his mistakes. I also tried not to do any harsh punishments because I did not want to have an angry child. According to Miller, “But when a teen gets angrier as time goes by — or more rigid and defensive — it is a cause for concern” (Miller, 2014). My mistakes caused me to have a child who did not finish high school and that ended up in jail before the age of eighteen.
