My junior year, I did more writing. My teacher assigned the class to read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and Fast Food Nation, and to research topics present in both books. For example, I picked how people in lower economic situations get taken advantage of. The class was , also, assigned to write a satire. At the time, I was very interested in double standards and feminism. As a result, I wrote my satire on how women are treated only as sex symbols and the double standards on women. My senior year, I did a lot of AP English writing style things. Toward the end of the year, I wrote a research paper about why Shaka Zulu beat Julius Caesar in Epic Rap Battles. My writing background is not anything to brag about and I am not the most advanced writer. I hope to be able to write a research paper that has a persuasive argument. I , also, hope to be able to use the rhetorical triangle in my writing to
improve my writing.
My understanding of rhetoric is being able to make a persuasive argument in speech and writing effectively. The use of rhetoric is effective if it uses pathos, ethos, and logos to get the message across. Rhetoric is used all around us in the modern world to express all types of messages. Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela used rhetoric in their speeches to communicate what they stood for. Their speeches appealed to the logical, emotional, and moral sides of people, which helped them gain followers and supporters. In advertisements, rhetoric is used so that people will buy advertisers’ products. Advertisements prey on people’s emotions, their logical minds, and their morality. Obviously, rhetoric is used in arguments and debates. The use of rhetoric is used in the simplest ways to demonstrate small messages to big messages. It is not as apparent at times, but it’s still there. We are in an information-- based society; therefore, we somewhat need rhetoric to convey all types of messages. Therefore, rhetoric has a permanent place in our modern world.
