In high school, we were generally always taught to write persuasive essays and a few times, an informative essay; however, we really never were required to write a rhetorical essay, so when this topic came up, it really required a lesson on rhetorical analysis itself. As someone who generally does better in conversations, and in school, math and science, writing has always been something that hasn’t come as natural to me. I have really had to write many essay to get to where I can write like I can today.…

An adept writer usually depends on an existing way of writing which they learnt from others. The basic procedures of academic writing can be found in the templates which would help students to be familiar with conventional writing patterns and to make more sounded arguments. The most essential template in the book is the “they say, I say” template that teaches students to react to the arguments made by other people. The authors believed that a well-argued academic writing should include the opinion of others so that readers will know why there is a need to make an argument. The arguments that writers respond to do not have to be an eminent writer or the audience. From the template, we can learn that we do not need to be restricted to agreement and disagreement. We can agree and disagree at the same time. In addition, templates can help students to make more complicated moves…
In the introduction to “They say/I say”: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein provide templates designed to engage students to critically and academically think at the college level and in life. Specifically, Graff and Birkenstein argue that the types of writing templates they offer students the necessary means to formulate and structure their writing in an effective manner. As the authors themselves put it, "the underlying structure of effective academic writing--and of responsible public discourse--resides not just in stating our own ideas, but in listening closely to others around us, summarizing their views in a way that they will recognize, and responding with our own ideas in kind." Although some…

Well, I can now say after reading last week's article by Hass and Flower and this weeks Penrose and Geisler's which was about how important rhetorical reading is and can help understand what you are reading, has opened my eyes to that fact that these are only part of why I have trouble with writing. As I reflect on past writing assignments, I now see it could have been due to my lack of experiences within certain rhetorical situations. Now that I have advanced my education and have gained additional experience on how to approach writing differently, my style of writing seems to flow better, and has become less intimidating. Which has lead to fewer sentence fragments; consistent grammar and being less critical, this has helped me, become a more knowledgeable writer. I can now say I am more like Roger and less like Janet because I now can connect the texts I am reading with real world events or things that have happened within my own life. Ultimately, I have now found that being a more experienced student has helped me improve how to read between the lines and not read just to paraphrase, it has also helped me write a better structured, more comprehensive, and well-organized essay using better examples. The important part of these readings…

For a Christmas gift for his girlfriend in 2010, Tri Tang went shopping for a Garmin global positioning system (GPS). He found exactly what he wanted at a Best Buy store for $184.85. But instead of dropping it into his cart and proceeding to the cashier, Tri pulled out his smartphone and typed in the model number. He found the exact same Garmin GPS on Amazon's Web site for $106.75, with no shipping and no tax.…

Psychopathy (/saɪˈkɒpəθi/) (or sociopathy /ˈsoʊsiəˌpæθi/) is traditionally defined as a personality disorder characterized by enduring antisocial behavior, diminished empathy and remorse, and disinhibited or bold behavior. The definition of psychopathy has varied significantly throughout the history of the concept; different definitions continue to be used that are only partly overlapping and sometimes appear contradictory.[1]…
I think of habits of mind as a special thought process in which people use to make decisions, help decide what is right and wrong, and what is the better choice. As Greene and Lidinsky state it is, "patterns of thought that lead them to question assumptions, explore alternatives, anticipate opposing arguments, compare experiences, and identify the causes and consequences of ideas and events" (12). By this I believe they are saying that habits of mind are how the brain works to seek answers and come to conclusions. Habits of mind plays a large role in society because people encounter situations multiple times in a day and people constantly have to make decisions in order to come to a final conclusion. All the possible outcomes and alternatives have to be scanned and played out and habits of mind would be what to use.…
