This is thanks to desegregation and affirmative action laws that have been put into action over the past several years. However, even with these laws we are not a perfect nation and there is still cases where social inequities can allow discrimination and prejudices to rear their ugly heads in today’s society. Social inequities can affect a particular races basic human rights such as the right to live in a certain area, be hired for a certain job, be able to travel freely, acceptance into schools or colleges, and even the right to …show more content…
Like many subjects similar to this one (racism in general, prejudice, and discrimination) people’s views on it can differ tremendously. Some speak from experience and some speak on it based on facts that they are taught. I’ll touch on an example that I previously mentioned to support the argument that yes, social inequities are existent in today’s society. When you look at prisons today, it is clear that minorities make up a much larger chunk of the inmate population than whites. People who argue that social inequities are the cause of this say that this is a result if whites having always been a more protected race in the US and because of this so called protection, they are favored in the justice system and are given more access to better attorneys. People who support the idea that social inequities don’t exist can of course use the argument that the reason that minorities make up most of the inmate population is simply because they are the ones who are responsible for committing the crimes that get them in trouble in the first

As of the most recent studies, women account for 1 out of 4 new HIV/AIDS cases in the United States, and 2 out of 3 of these new cases are African American women. The majority of these women acquired HIV from having unprotected sex with men. Although the overall amount of people acquiring HIV/AIDS have dropped, the percentage for African American women is on the rise. One can only wonder why this is the case. Clearly, there are not enough HIV prevention intervention programs geared to fit the needs of African American women.…

Equality stems from Plessy v. Ferguson, Brown v. Board of Education, and Loving v. Virginia: their impact was tremendous enough to spark a whole movement. After the cases' influence spread through America, ignorance about race and equality was diminishing. The freedom to be wherever one wants, to be with whomever one wants and to talk to whomever one wants is due to these influential cases. We live in a world where there are numerous discriminations: race, religion, sex, age, or sexual orientation. bell hooks has eloquently explained multiple reasons why the black population is discriminated against in an educational setting, “...most white folks are rarely, if ever, in a situation where they must listen to black women lecture to them.” (hooks, 31) Daily we hear about the killings of transsexual men and women, as well as multiple examinations talking about men who receive more money then women in the workplace for the same job. Carl Grant intelligently said, “Another factor stimulating the change is the acceptance of the importance of social cultural factors in learning and the movement toward challenging traditional assumptions and envisioning multiple possibilities for change.” (Grant, 1) The discrimination I’m talking about most people don’t understand or even see,…

But so many events in history have proven that we have no completely lived up to this idea of all being equal and having an equal chance at obtaining the natural given rights of being alive. Even today there are still protests of the minorities who do not have an equal chance as they would if they had been born a different race. While many advancements have been made, it seems you can still be discriminated against, no matter who you are. Centuries ago, and even now, the government has more so then not, been against the basic human rights of…

Most white Canadians and American’s now days like to believe that racism is a thing of the past and in no way affects today’s society. They believe that the terrible circumstances of the black community is a result of black people and nothing else. Terrible stereotypes submerged from this flawed way of thinking like “Black people are thugs”, “black people are criminals”. Black people are more likely to commit crimes because they are at a disadvantage that doesn’t allow them to achieve a better life. The judicial system never benefits people of colour, income inequality between races isn’t improving, and black people are discouraged in the educational system…

For example, schools aren't segregated, there isn't different restaurants for whites and colored people nor is there different restrooms and water fountains. This is a difference from what it was in the past does make it better for those of color to live freely, but not completely because there are still people in our society who constantly judge others. The fact of the matter is that no matter how much we would like to believe that it has gone away, we know it has not. Colored people are still being called “nigga” and as we know words cut deep, those words are engraved there minds, people don't see it as a big deal until they are being discriminated and are being called names. However, when white man is called a “cracker” a whole other level is being crossed, and the same goes for when latino(a) is being called a “beaner”, it offends many people…
