Mystery Food Investigation
ntroduction
In this experiment we created standards to be able to compare a mystery substance off of. We were tasked to investigate a murder that took place by analyzing a man's last meal to find out where he had ate based on the content of his stomach. Before we could test the mystery substance we had to establish standards, so we could compare off of them. Based on the results of this lab, we believed that the victim last ate at Buffalo Wild Wings (Veliz).
Methods and Materials
We started this lab off with establishing our standards, we completed 4 tests to determine how items will appear with and without certain macromolecules. We did not have a working Sudan so we had to switch to the paper bag method. Instead of adding 5 drops of Sudan IV, waiting 5 minutes and shaking to see the results, we smeared the substances on a paper bag and waited to see how they would react.

We were able to determine this by the presence of simple sugar, protein and lipids which are all found in a typical meal at Buffalo Wild Wings. The way we could so easily determine this is through the standards we have established so we were able to compare our mystery meal substance to a constant. Even though we did not have a working Sudan IV in this lab we found an alternative to figuring it all out even though having it would have been nice. I personally believe these test can definitely help in the forensic field when determining parts of a crime. Below our the stands we established along with how our victims dinner held. The meal turned orange in the simple sugar test determining that it was in fact present, yet red in complex sugar determining there wasn't any. Then lilac in our protein test and the substance just sat on top of the brown paper bag in the lipid test making it positive in both proteins and

It has been approximately twenty months since 2001s September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, and still victims' bodies are in the process of being identified. In matters like this, forensic scientists are forced to "bring out the big guns." Researchers can compare DNA samples from bodies to those taken directly from the victim: from hair, a toothbrush, a family member, and etcetera (Whitfield 6).…

According to the evidence derived from our lab, we have determined that Unknown A, B, C, and D are to be identified as the Sprite, burger, fries, and bun, respectively. Each Unknown provided evidence that we eventually used to match to each element of the meal. Along with the lab data, our prior knowledge also led us to our results. We were able to determine that Unknown A is the Sprite due to the fact that every test was negative except for simple sugars, a macromolecule that the majority of sodas contain.…

In today’s world we witness horrible epidemics and tragedies on a seemingly daily basis. There are groups of people out there, groups that Jayson Lusk refers to as the “food police” in his book so aptly titled, “The Food Police,” who choose to focus their energies on creating pseudo-controversies by using false or flawed research and drawing conclusions based on emotion rather than on logic. The food police have managed to influence the thinking of our media, schools, and even our government. By constantly spewing propaganda supporting their questionable claims, the food elite have made it clear that they seek a sort of totalitarianism when it comes to the food that you and I are buying and consuming.…

The book I chose to read for my summer homework was In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. Pollan has written many books regarding what to eat and how the foods we consume affect us. In this book, he opens with simple advice, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants” (Pollan 1). As straightforward as it sounds, Pollan quickly demonstrates how complicated this can be. Food is all around us. However, there are whole foods, stuff you’d find at a farmer’s market, and then there are the foods that line up the walls of our supermarkets, highly processed snacks and “foods” that contain a mirade of unpronounceable ingredients. Many of these foods processed foods, especially those that make health claims such as “low-fat”, “lowers…
