Mystical Events In Jordan Papers
However, Jordan Paper created an outline that defines a mystical event, which can help a person determine whether or not they have experienced one. The first sequence of events of when a mystical event occurs is usually when a person is sitting still or moving in a pattern that does not require any thought. For example, during Jordan Paper’s first mystical event he stated, “I was lying on my side and directly in my vision across a sunlit, mown field I perceived an attractive woman.”. Moreover, the second stage of a mystical event is a feeling of merging with a person’s vision or surroundings. As Jordan witnessed the attractive woman, slowly approach him until she and the rest of his surroundings filled his view and became one with him. The third sequence of a mystical event is becoming one with light from within their self. In the case of Jordan, the light was white and he had the option of entering the light or have the mystical event cease. Additionally, the fourth stage of a mystical event is when they feel themselves completely disappear. For instance, Jordan mentioned that he understood what the meaning of death meant as he felt not-being. Often the mystic is not aware, at least initially, of the revolutionary quality of his vision and interpretation. The nature of his experience, incommunicable, indistinct, defies translation, unlike that of a prophet, who conveys a clear message. The unio mystica is a profoundly personal emotion, but once felt it can no longer be forgotten or denied. To the outsider, however, the result of this radical transformation appears akin to madness. The mystic claims to be above authority, he seeks to establish his own system based on this revelation. (Lamont 130-31)…

We sat in a circle as we learned a little about the history of meditation and spiritual journeys in other cultures. We each took a sip of tea as we learned what might be achieved through our participation, and noticed how the rest of the room started to fade to black as we stared at the center candle flame. Phame then instructed us to lie down and put the blindfolds on. He turned the music up, and everyone was quiet. The music seemed to change as I listened intently.…

"Christianity started out in Palestine as a fellowship; it moved to Greece and became a philosophy; it moved to Italy and became an institution; it moved to Europe and became a culture; it came to America and became an enterprise" as stated by theological scholar Sam Pascoe. Throughout Christianity’s journey they have come across ties with the religions Judaism and Islam. There are few similarities between the three major religions. One similarity is that Abraham is viewed the same between all three religions. The only other similarity is that all 3 religions believe in a God, just in different ways. There are much more similar theological aspects of the religions when Christianity is compared to Islam itself and Judaism alone.…

However James’ view has its weaknesses, for example some people have suggested that religious experiences are similar to hallucinations caused by drugs such as LSD. Furthermore J.L. Mackie argued in ‘The Miracle of Theism’ that if mystical experiences are explainable psychologically, which James’ stated is possible, then mystical experiences can have no authority even for the person who has the experience. Instead, Mackie suggest that people who believe mystical experiences are authoritative are ‘insufficiently critical’.…
