Jim is a donkey. He has this urge to create new levels of madness “on the daily”. Jim sits his lazy bum in his La-Z-Boy and pretends he has a job by staring at a computer all day. And the breathing. Oh my heavens the man breaths like Big Foot having an asthma attack. The car rides with Jim are the worst. He always brings an apple, but then doesn't eat it until you're in the car and can't escape the chewing sounds. You'd think a grown man in his fifties would have learned to chew with his mouth closed. Between the unholy chewing of the apples and the human ventilator, the side of the road starts looking real friendly.…
Ethan Saylor, a twenty-six year-old with Down Syndrome, was slammed to the floor, held down, and handcuffed. The brutal force left the young man with a fracture in his throat cartilage resulting in his tragic death caused by asphyxiation. After seeing the movie Zero Dark Thirty, Ethan briefly left the theater then returned to see it again without paying. The manager of the theater then called security which was three off-duty deputies acting as security officers. Ethan swore at them and refused to leave, but never acted in a violent way towards the officers. Ethan’s caretaker that had accompanied him to the theater even stepped in and pleaded with the officers to just wait and let her talk to him. The officers not understanding how to handle…
Something does not seem right, or rather, safe. You feel the presence of the night as if it was a living, breathing creature. What if it was? You feel someone's hands on you, and chills climb through your body. You know this is the last time you will ever see anything in your life. Your world is suddenly crumbling away. You hear a noise, the last one you will ever hear. It is something behind you. Something that would end your life. Your watch begins its final countdown. This is your last day.…
Paul committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. He saw no future for himself and chose to end his life. Just like that. It was a violent and lonely end. Paul is a fictional character in the story titled “Paul’s Case” by Willa Cather. Paul was a young man who was unhappy with his life and felt he was on the outside looking in at people living the life he wanted. He stole money and sneaked away to New York City to live the life to which he aspired. For one week Paul lived his dream and even though he dressed the part and walked among those he admired, he did not interact--he was still on the outside looking in. Once his theft was discovered he did not want to face the consequences or worse, go back to his previous life, so he carried out the plan he’d decided upon at the beginning of his adventure-- to end his life.…
When thinking on the question, how am I feeling at the midpoint of my course I begin to have mixed emotions. The course gives me all the tools necessary to be successful, I am dealing with personal issues that are preventing me from reaching my full potential. I know as a nurse there will be times when I must put emotions aside and make my priorities first. I am using this experience as a learning tool to teach myself how to persevere during times of grief.…
Why it is unjust and unmoral to approve of medical assistants in the pursuit of death, such as suicide if the patients ask for such help? There are two side to every argument, there are some people that believe that is is morally ethical to receive PAS (Physician-Assisted Suicide). Then, of course there’s the opposing side to the debate in which this paper will cover and that side is :The medical practice is PAS is unjust, unmoral and shouldn’t be legalized for the fact the the will of life out powers a moment of misery.…
During my high school years, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was horrible news to hear, especially since my mother has been such an influential figure in my life. In addition to this, my father was depressed during this time because of his unemployment and my mother’s cancer diagnosis. My mother was the only source of income for our family, so she went to work throughout her the pain from her chemotherapy. I was distraught from my mother’s illness, but I was expected to take on more household responsibilities so that my mother could rest when she got home from work. I was expected to help shop, clean, and take care of my younger sister by helping her with her homework. These responsibilities in addition to keeping up with my school work made this situation an extremely stressful time for me.…
This is a really good topic. My first job in nursing was in surgical oncology, which was a very mentally and emotionally challenging field. My oncology patients would range from young adult to elderly. Some would confide and tell me how they wish their illness would just take them to end the suffering. I would find myself so torn and wonder how I would feel if I had a sickness pretty much ripping the life out of me. Part of me thinks I would want to give up as my patients expressed and explore option to end the suffering, such as physician assisted suicide, but part of me thinks I would want to fight.…
Every human being is in search of some sort of acknowledgement. Whether it be acknowledgment from a friend, family member, business associate or in measures of popularity, people are constantly in search of being seen and heard. I believe that the value of life is shown through one’s acknowledgement of other human beings and themselves.…
Suicide is the intentional termination of one's own life with the objective being to cease living. For the purposes of this essay, self-sacrifice, or suicide for the sake of others, will not be considered a form of suicide as in that situation the individual does not possess the desire to die, they are instead putting the lives of others above their own. The standard position on suicide holds that all suicides are immoral and irrational except for in cases of terminal illness. This position on suicide is too restrictive and dismisses the suffering others experiences in instances beyond terminal illness. There are extreme situations in which most would agree that suicide is an acceptable choice. For example, someone trapped in a fire or subjected…
often labeled compassionate, according to the columnist for the Wall Street Journal, Joni Eareckson Tada, legalized assisted suicide or euthanasia is really a deadly double standard for those with severe disabilities, both conditions that are labeled terminal and those that are not. She seems to be of the opinion that euthanasia should never be considered an option no matter how severe or subjective suffering the person is facing. In the article, Tada claims that legalization of euthanasia, “sends a clear message that a person with a disability may not have a life worth living” (1). She touches on euthanasia in The Nethlands and Belguium . She stands for a powerful example of a person with this depilating condition, in this case quadriplegia, can accomplish in spite of her condition. However this is somewhat of a bias perspective because it implies that she has put a measure on the subjective pain this condition and similar to it entails. There should be certain conditions set in order to qualify for euthanasia so that it is an option for people who want it but we can also make a system to prevent people from misusing it. We were granted free will which includes the right to end our life when we chose.…
I personally am torn on the issue of whether people should have to ask permission to commit suicide or not, I really see both sides of the argument. One part of me really feels that people should have the right to do what they want with their bodies, without having to ask permission from others. The other half of me thinks that in a lot of cases that suicide is not the answer, and with help and treatment those people could really seriously be healed from these thoughts that suicide is the only way out of their issues and problems. There are lots of programs that offer crisis intervention which our book defines as, “Thus the program offers crisis intervention: they try to help suicidal people see their situations more accurately, make better…
Like many, I could use this opportunity to brag about my academic or extracurricular achievements, but in doing so I would be omitting a defining factor of my life thus far-anxiety. While not completely aware of it, I have spent a majority of my highschool career in a state of constant anxiety. Similar to others who suffer from generalized anxiety disorder, I am prone to feeling overwhelmed when making decisions or presenting myself in communal settings. As a result, I found myself overwhelmed and struggling with the start of secondary school. My disquieted tendencies made me wary of expanding my comfort zone, in turn stunting my own personal growth over the past few years. Subsequently, I have spent a long time attempting to beat my anxiety.…
Death is a constant presence in life that can not be escaped and is experienced by everyone. Dylan Thomas’s “Do not go gentle into that good night” and Emily Dickinson’s “Because I could not stop for Death” and both deal with different perspectives of death. Thomas’s poem looks at death from an external perspective of watching a person die where Dickinson’s poem looks at death through the perspective of a person experiencing death. These perspectives on death show the acceptance of death and eternity and death and disparity of life ending.…
