Choice and Impact

We all make choices. It’s a matter of life. Look back through your life for a second. At this time, millions of memories should be racing through your mind. What is the best choice you think you have ever made? In this life we make millions of them. Remember the choices we make open up the path of which life will take us and the impact in which they have on our life is only up to us. So with that said; the best choice I ever made was when I chose to follow the Lord; not just because of what led up to it, but how I was saved and the positive impact it has had on my life thus far. Early on a cold, snowy Saturday morning, my FCA group and I are ready to strap in and head to the airport for departure. New Hampshire is our longed destination. Our trip is based around getting closer as a family of friends and more importantly growing closer with our relationship with God himself. As we say out goodbyes to our remaining family members and friends; I see my mom start to cry. She’s always been emotional when comes to me being gone for a long period of time. I hug her tight, telling her I love her and she refuses to let go. Finally, we all pile on to the smelliest, most ragged out bus the school would let us drive and off we went. To help pass time on what seemed to be the longest bus ride of our lives we all begin to sing and play games among each other. Spending this time laughing with all of my friends is like no other. The feeling of chemistry in the air is almost as if we had known each other all our lives. Suddenly, we arrive at the airport in Charlotte, NC. Finally, we can get something to feed this lion of a stomach I hear growling. As we unload all of our bags our group leaders begin to split us up in groups so that we can be easily found in the overly crowded airport. My friend and I take a glance at each other, reading each other’s minds. We both race towards the ravishing smell of doritos locos tacos from the world famous taco bell. The

Many think that narrative and descriptive styles of writing are one in the same, but they are not. Although they complement each other for a complete story; you can successfully write using one style without the other. The authors Connell, C.M. & Sole, K. define narrative writing as, "Narration is storytelling from the perspective of a narrator, and the story may be true, false, imaginary, or a combination." (2013, chapter 6.3). When you tell a story you want your readers to experience it through your words as if they were there when it happened. Connell, C.M. & Sole, K. define descriptive writing as, "Description is a pattern of writing that can be defined as painting pictures with words." (2013, chapter 6.4). A descriptive story leaves no detail unrevealed and appeals to all of your senses. When comparing Maya Angelou's descriptive poem "Caged Bird" and Judy Brady's narrative essay "I Want a Wife", it is clear that there many similarities and differences between the two styles of writing. However, because Maya Angelou's poem has descriptive language that appeals to your five senses, specific detail descriptions and uses figurative language to compare the unfamiliar with something more familiar it makes it a superior piece of literature.…

I was exposed to Crossfit while I was stationed at Ramstein AB, Germany. Most people take a look at a posted workout or video, of elite Crossfit athletes and get intimidated or scared. They shouldn’t! The workouts that get posted to these sites are made for the more advanced, elite athletes. Crossfit is a new idea and like all new things, you either love it or you hate it. However, Crossfit brings something new to the table which is why many believe it is the better way of life and physical fitness. First, we will look at who started Crossfit and what it means. Then I will describe what the community is and lastly we will talk about competitions.…

In viewing the sublime town, I move at a languid gait, despite the fact that it is midnight. The phase moon is visible as a fully illuminated disc that is encircled by shimmering stars; which creates an atmosphere that makes me feel unravel. Below this stupendous sight is a barren house that is totally in contrast to the scenery above it. The house is dark and is surrounded by white clouds; however the luminous light from the moon shines on this haunted house. Some of the windows are broken while some are cracked and filled with moulds. The roof is large and has several apertures and is falling at the seams. It lacks iridescence as it embeds only one fainted colour – grey. I quiver as the cold breeze blows, and the smell of mist fills the air and the leaves around the house arise. I am now in a state where my mind is not lucid, as I muddle whether I should return home or to continue this haphazard adventure.…

The purpose between a narrative and descriptive essay differ from each other because of how you want to convey the story and how to accomplish the purpose. In How to Say Nothing in 500 Words, by Paul McHenry Roberts, the intended audience is for students and writers, and in Once More to the Lake, by E. B. White, it is for readers who had experience with sharing a moment with their loved ones, which both stories accomplish a specific audience.…

Gazing out my office window I often saw this elderly man shuffling down the sidewalk, and I thought to myself, how horrible it must have been for him to spend his entire life with a curved spine. This man's head was forced forward as if he was looking down at his feet all day long. I began to mentally compare his horrible life with mine. I was healthy as an ox, a big strong guy, and he must have been deformed from birth. I thought that it just wasn't fair to him, or for that matter, anyone else living with discomfort or pain, while my life has been near perfect. I sat there with my head in my hands with my eyes now closed, as I began to silently pray once again. In my deepest thought I gave a shout out to God. "If you are listening to me God, and I know you are, I want to get serious here for a moment. God you have blessed me with many things. You have given me a great life, and a healthy wonderful family. I'm not wealthy but I live comfortably, thanks to you my Lord. Please God hear my prayer, and remove the pain and discomfort from the afflicted. In exchange, please give it to me, so that I shall carry this small cross, that they may be healed." This was a sincere dedicated thought.I reinforced my thoughts again, and confirmed with myself, that I surely felt that I would be able to handle whatever malady God may present to…

She is a beautiful young woman, perhaps the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Her hair is a midnight black color; it almost reminded him of the color of the night sky as he looks through a window. As he looked at her hair he notice the way the light catches in it and it shimmers as it flows with her every move. His eyes are drawn to the fact that her hair is very lengthy reaching down to the middle of her torso, so long in fact that it almost caresses the small of her back. He remembered running a hand through her hair and it felt as though he was touching some of the finest silken fabric ever woven. Soft and almost liquid like, her hair seems to flow over his fingers like water as he touched it. He finds himself wanting to bury his face in her hair, as if to hide from the world and all the problems it holds for him on a daily basis. As he looked at, and touched her hair it seems to take grasp of his mind and deny him of any other thoughts about anything else going on around him. Her beautiful face is demanding of attention. Its high cheekbones calling his eyes to the statuesque bone structure underlying its gentleness. She has been graced with a look that could be that of royalty. Her tight, rose colored lips are pursed in what appears to be mid-kiss. The slight hints of moisture on her lips making them glisten in the light, causing them to look as though they are really a reflection on the waters of a pond and not really a part of her at all. They seem to call out to him, beckoning him to lean in and press his lips against hers. Her molten golden eyes staring back at him as though to pierce his very soul and derive his thoughts and feelings. He could see the different shades of gold streaking through her eyes, making them appear to be alive just as fire does when it moves and flickers. They appear to cast a spell on him causing him to neglect all else and freeze in a state of mystification. Her skin is creamy white, like the color of…

My mom going on the trip calmed some of these nerves, but that didn’t change the fact that I was traveling 6 hours away to do service work with strangers for a week. I got to the camp, and the whole atmosphere put everyone in a joyful and loving mood. After all, we were at a Catholic camp, and the whole purpose was to be there to cheerfully serve the less fortunate, so the staff tried to make the best out of it as they could. I knew right at that first night that I was going to enjoy the week, but that is an understatement. I enjoyed it so much that I have been going on these trips every summer since then, to make 5 total trips to different cities around the United States doing unique service projects. The feeling of helping others in such a selfless way constantly rekindles a spark in myself when my own light goes out. Going on these trips always gives me such a rare feeling, that will last in me for months after I’m home from the trip, and as soon as I start to lose that feeling, it’s time for next summer’s trip already. The decision to go back every year is always a…

I remember that warm day in May three years ago when my Dad and I went to an auction to buy myself a new car. We were surrounded by people as we stood in the middle of a muddy yard. I was holding a white card with a number on it, waiting for the Mustang I wanted to place a bid on. The auctioneer was a short old man with white wiry hair, two fingers missing on his left hand and the rough voice of a chain smoker. His name was named Mickey. Mickey began to auction off items like a TV, couch, stove, microwave, bed and several other household items. In the meantime I began to inspect the two cars being auctioned off carefully.…

I remember, as a child, my first trip to the carnival. I stood at the entrance, my small hand held firmly by a larger one belonging to a much more confident adult, as I took in my surroundings. The flashing lights, the music and screaming all had me gawking at anything and everything that my eyes happened upon. What caught and kept my attention were the rides that seemed to torture their occupants. It still amazes me that average, ordinary people eagerly trade in the serenity and security of the ground for the chance to be tossed through the air like vegetables in a food processor. It is somewhat awe inspiring to think that at some time in history, someone thought people would enjoy the above torment. As an adult, it is precisely this thrill and excitement of having survived the ride that keeps me coming back for more.…

My favorite childhood place was at my grandparent’s house. My grandparent’s last name was Mountain. Their property had the nick name, “The Mountain House,” I remember wonderful memories of spending time there with my family; eating grandma’s famous potato salad, tasting grandpa’s fabulous barbeque ribs, and most of all eating those wonderful Mountain family cherries. The sounds and smells are truly alive in my memory. These memories are incredibly real for me, even today. I often drive by the location of my most memorable day, a family reunion at my grandparent’s house. They had a two-story, little white house with green trim. It was a corner house on a four-way stop sign roadway right down the road from the only high school in a cozy small town. Our family reunion happened every year, usually around the Fourth of July. How I miss these wonderful, eventful, and fabulous times at my grandma and grandpa’s property. These are my favorite childhood memories of the “Mountain Family Reunion” they still remain vivid in my mind.…

When the floodgates open and water pours down from the sky there is nothing to do other than hope and pray that you are prepared for the storm, and what better a place to go for supplies then a Wal-Mart. People rushed in and out pushing up against each other like a school of fish swimming in tight quarters. In my sweats and hoodie, I strolled in trying to avoid getting pushed over while I noted a sign that read “open late, get your supplies today”. I wandered a bit until I found the perfect, most inconspicuous spot to sit; an eyeglass kiosk located at about 30 feet from the 15 checkout lines. In the kiosk, there was a sole woman who wore a grey sweatshirt with a long white lab coat and white pants that set her apart from the customers. She had a very dark, black skin tone, and black curly hair.…

I reach my destination just as the sun begins its decent. Sighing contently, I sit down at the top of the cliff to observe the setting sun. On the left, the town lights up as the sunlight reflects off the shiny rooftops of the shops and business buildings. The glass windows and doors shine with a brilliance that cannot be seen up close but from a distance, it is magical. The pink aura encasing the town seems surreal as my eyes follow the people heading toward their homes after a hard day’s work. A cool breeze brushes past me from the right and takes my attention to the sea.…
