Narrative Essay On My American Dream

I will begin by saying that as a child, I was not exactly normal or average. While most children held the all too common dream of being a racecar driver or astronaut, I set my goals more realistically and thought I would most likely end up at a desk job in a cubicle; and while other people’s ambitions diminished while growing up, mine grew. I remember the look of astonishment on my parents’ face when I charged “interest” to my brothers while lending money around age eight, I could never quite tell if it was a look of disbelief or pride. But not everyone was so astonished by me; I was still a fairly average child in a small town in south central Pennsylvania, all things but atypical. A few teachers nominated me to get into our GIEP (Gifted Individuals Education Program) but other than that, I was normal. Then middle school hit. Mine was where I decided that things would get better. But not just that, I decided later on that I was willing to talk about it. I have spoken in front of hundreds of people about my experience. And it was not what I experienced that signaled to the community I had grown up, it was that I shared my experience and that I talked about such a complex topic with such maturity. And that I was not afraid of a crowd or of anyone’s opinion or judgement any more. Being subject to people’s contempt or judgement no longer phased me, nor did their praise motivate me. By speaking to my community about my life with such openness and honesty I gained their understanding and trust, and they saw that I was not motivated by people but my own intrinsic source of what was right. Speaking at the events and functions I have proved to them that I was more than my experience, and that I was more grown up than many
