Narrative Essay on Poker
Steven Touitou

I remember the first time having play poker , I was maybe 10 years old and were looking at my older brother playing in the living room with their friends , I already knew the rules that my father thought me few years ago but that was the first time I was introduces to Texas Hold'em a different variance that became the most popular game of poker. As soon as the group left the table , I remember grabbing the deck of card dealt myself two cards, draw five cards on the board and doing that over and over. If back then I would have knew how poker was gonna be so big in 2004 period called the “poker boom”. Time when poker arrived on the Tv channel of ESPN and online poker were starting to be introduce to the public, I would have started to learn the game way earlier than I did.

Poker is a game where it can only 5 minutes to learn , but a lifetime to master. I was always playing with friends, we were all putting 5 dollars, and the winner took all the money. But back then we all knew the rules and thought we were good at it, But that's how the human ego perceive the game , we all think we'r good at it but in fact we don't have a clue of what we are actually doing, and that was the case for me. When I turn 18 in 2008 , I started to go play at my local casino with a lot of confidence that I was good and very fast found myself losing most of the money that I had , that wasn't fun at all, I didn't want to tell my parents scared that they thought I was getting addicted to gambling. But I loved the game , I knew that they were a way to get better but I could not figured out how. I then heard of online poker website were I could play for small amount of money doing tournament and cash game.I Decided that I was gonna start doing that in order to gain experience. What I found that was very dangerous with online poker was how difficult it is to quit playing , and how addictive it can get, I was of course losing a bit of money on the long term due to my

I was born in Vietnam, which is located in the Eastern part of the Indochina peninsula, bordering China to the North, Laos and Cambodia to the West, the Eastern Sea to the East, and the Pacific to the South. My father moved from the North to the South after the officially unification of the North and South Vietnam in 1975. He met my mother, and they got married. My parents and most of my extended family aren’t big on gambling, so I personally never understood the appeal and thrill of gambling. A couple years ago, my parents had sent me to study abroad with the hope that I am able to have a better education in the United States. Once I started to go to college here, I have a broader perspective about the world I live in. However, I also experienced isolation, boredom, loneliness, stress and depression. Therefore, I tried to find an activity to feel included, and to relieve stresses of everyday life. Every weekend some friends and I had a poker night, and the locations changed as each of us take turns hosting the game. There were ten of us whom usually play and we all are Asian. I would say that I had a great time with the group. At that moment, gambling became a great way for me to get out, be around friends, and have fun. Gambling perhaps appeals to me because of its social aspects. Nevertheless, I have seen the damage gambling can cause when someone cannot control themselves. Beginning as a regular activity which is acceptable and entertaining, gambling addiction ends up being harmful to most players and causing unhealthy outcomes. But at worst, gambling destroys education, careers and relationships, and empty life savings.…
