Typically, people think of reading when they see a novel or a short story, but I think of reading when I’m out on the baseball field. When I hear the word “reading”, unlike most people, I think of a green grassy baseball diamond at night, with the lights lighting it up, filled with fans in the stands. Believe it or not, I read all the time on the field. I read the ball coming off the bat when I’m playing in the field. When I hear the “ding” of the metal bat and hard, rubber ball colliding, I know that there is a chance I could make a great play. I can see the ball getting bigger and bigger as in approaches me. I read the ball coming out of the pitcher’s hand, picking up the spin as soon as I can so I can know when and where to swing to make solid contact with the ball. I even read people’s body language when I’m pitching. I can tell a lot about the batter by how he’s standing and the facial expression on his face.…

Literacy Narrative; Too Much to Say The problem that plagues the modern mind is a surplus of content. Increasingly in my generation, with the trend to binge on internet freedom, the average person has seen too much to be able to form a clear opinion. With an ever-changing fleet of perspectives invading one’s mind, it is as if one is screaming in a riot to try and convince themselves of their own opinion. The most influential instructor I’ve been lead by, a burly yeti of an English teacher/ wrestling coach; Aaron Cantrell, told me clearly one day that I ‘just had too much to say’. That was it; Eureka! He had struck the chord loudly enough for me to hear that it was made up of individual strings. When I looked down at the prompt he had thrown around the room, this leaflet that seemed daunting and futile, I saw that buried in the complex of Times New Roman, there was really only one question. There was one solitary string that needed to be voiced at a time to complete the chord the prompt requested. I only needed to have one idea at a time. Line by line, one string after another, I plucked each sentence out, and in the disarray of jumbled context and my grammatical errors; I heard a resemblance of harmony. With small adjustments in placement and a tune-up of fanciful synonyms, I began to hear the chord I wanted. ‘It takes bravery’ The Yeti-man proclaimed. ‘It takes courage to have an opinion and stick with it long enough to fully understand it yourself’. In a fit of fantastic allusions, to which I can show no decency to try and recreate, he said, ‘the secret is to believe what you say’. Now in a swirling mind, filled with today’s troubles, tomorrow’s worries, yesterday’s regret and consequential foresight, it’s hard to know who you really are. That’s the rub though, the practice; to alleviate the overwhelming amount of information that you’ve borne witness to, by taking a prompt one idea at a time. It’s all about figuring…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. We see animals every day. They are our pets, companions, and, to some, family. They are also our dinner, new jacket or bag, and the pain behind our household products. So when does it qualify as cruel, or even inhumane? What is animal cruelty? According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) “Intentional cruelty, or abuse, is knowingly depriving an animal of food, water, socialization, or veterinary care. Maliciously torturing, maiming, or killing an animal.” Three major examples of animal cruelty today are found in the food industry, shelters, and testing facilities.…

The essay "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris tells about an educational experience of the author. He moves from New York city to France to learn French at the age of forty-one. Unfortunately, he is in a hostile situation which was being in a high pressure class with an intimidating and cruel teacher. Even though he spends time in Normandy, he is not able to fully understand what is being said by the teacher. He is quite nervous and upset because he has a prior background of French but that is not credible in the classroom. While in class, the teacher asks everyone to present a couple of their personal information. For the reason that the students are still new to the language, their vocabulary are narrow and not sophisticated. Thus, the teacher is very mean to those students who are trying to learn French, especially Sedaris. It continues for months. However, that becomes a motivation in his mind and he decides to take to next step to speak fluently in French. He puts really hard efforts in studying and doing homework to have a better understanding in the language. Eventually, he actually understands exactly what the teacher is saying and wants her to talks more.…

Having this fear of heights it causes his legs to shake his head to hurt and his knees to tremble. Body breaking out in a cold sweat he starts to think why is he up there. He starts jabbering to anyone who is nearby. As thoughts of certain death run through his mind, the world appears a precious, treasured place. He imagines his own funeral, then shrink back at the implications of where his thoughts are taking him. His stomach feels strange, and his palms are clammy. He is terrified of heights because the last time he was up this high he fell from a gun shot wound in Iraq. Of course, it’s not really a fear of being in a high place. Rather, it is the view of a long way to fall again, a firm wall between him and the edge. His sense of security is screamingly absent. There are no guardrails, flimsy though he pictures them, or other safety walls that he is used to. He can rely only on his own surefootedness—or lack thereof. He steps over to the edge of darkness that is to be most likely him facing his fear of the never-ending fall. Tied and rigged up to the tower using a middle of the rope double bowline he is ready to over come his fear of heights and falling 120ft. Thinking to himself rappel master school is not fun at all. As he turns to lower himself 90 degrees, feet on the tower, hands on the rope, right hand on the break side of the rope and left hand on the guide rope, he eases his break hand down to a forty-five degree angle looking over his right shoulder down to the ground. “Man that’s a long way down he says to himself” sweat beads forming on his brow. He can’t believe he is doing this to himself. As he locks the break hand in the small of his back his gazes at the ground still thinking to himself he is crazy for this. In a distance he can hear a voice calling to him to snap out of it, but he can’t tell where it’s coming from till he focuses on the reality of life that it’s coming from the instructor telling him to “look at him”. He turns his head…
