Narrative Therapy
2. A healthy family:
a. Understands the construct of the dominant culture in which they live and the effect on their family narrative.
b. Is empowered to identify their problems as separate from themselves and thereby disempower the problem.
c. Is able to re-author life narratives in such a way that they identify themselves in a new healthier manner.
How change happens:
1. A family is asked to describe their problem story, and eventually how they managed to survive their problem story.
2. The therapist will begin to deconstruct the problem by externalizing the family story so that clients experience an identify separate from the problem and the problem is disempowered.
This process is summed up in the statement, “The person is not the problem, the problem is the problem.” 3. A narrative takes form and the deconstructive process continues with “why” and “how” questions. 4. The therapist encourages family to remember unique outcomes when they showed competence and strength. These unique outcomes become the basis for a more positive narrative.
5. The process of creating this new story is called re-authoring. These lead to a new vigor of engagement in life or re-engagement with life.
6. The client can now decide whose voices or stories he will give authority to. These new stories are encouraged through groups, letters and life witnesses.

THERAPEUTIC TECHNIQUES
DECONSTRUCTION – Reconsider judgments by looking at both the good and bad elements in situations. The person is not the problem, the problem is the problem.

EXTERNALIZATION – Deconstructing the power of a narrative by looking at the problem separate from the client.

MAPPING – Discovering the relationship between the client and the problem through a series of open ended questions.

RE-AUTHORING – Client and therapist construct alternative stories that separate the client from the problem. UNIQUE OUTCOMES – Challenges the client to look for unique outcomes for problems.

    The Brice family consisted of a family unit of five. The father Davie a lawyer, the mother Caroline, their teenage daughter Claudia, the younger daughter Laura and younger son Don. The family was referred by a psychiatrist who had been seeing Claudia, but felt the whole family needed to be in therapy. The first session was a challenge, the family agreed to go in all together only for the initial session and they were not very comfortable to begin with. The mother Caroline felt the problem that should be address was the issues their teen daughter was having and she did not believe the entire family should be there. Both the mother and daughter came in angry to the therapy session and there was a lot of tension in the room. The father was respectful and stated he was happy to be there, but his body language told the therapist he has not comfortable being there. The youngest daughter Laura seemed to be in a cheerful mood with high energy. The youngest son Don did not show up for the first session. During the session there was an argument that broke out between mother and daughter, Carolyn seems to think they are in therapy to resolve the daughter’s issues that is affecting the entire family, but she does not feel the family as a unit has a problem. Both therapists agreed that it would not be ideal to start the family session without the youngest son Don who did not show up. David and Carolyn did not seem happy…

    I like the concept behind the collaborative and narrative therapies of focusing more on the client’s strengths and abilities. I lean towards the collaborative therapy practices because it seems freer flowing whereas the narrative therapies are more structured.     Narrative therapy is an approach to counseling that centers people as the experts in their own lives. This therapy intends to view problems as separate entities to people, assuming that the individual’s set of skills, experience and mindset will assist them which reduce the influence of problems throughout life. This therapeutic approach intends to place the individual in both the leading role and author roles, switching the view from a narrow perspective to a systemic and more flexible stance.
