Reading and Writing Growing up, I never struggled with a disorder, but never really enjoyed reading and writing. As a kid I’m not going to say I did not like school, because I get out the house and hang with my classmates at recess. Yet still was not a big fan of it, because the school work. I always wanted to go outside and run around than to sit down and read a book. I always wanted to go outside and run around then to sit down and read a book and write about it. In the fourth grade I did struggle with reading. I would read a passage, and do well until I get to a word and cannot pronounce it, then that mess up me reading the whole passage. It was pretty embarrassing. My teacher use to have the whole class take turns reading different paragraphs, and I would always raise my hand for the shortest one. Sometimes I did not get the part and get a part that’s longer. I felt as if she knew I was trying to run away from reading. However, I still did it because I wanted a good participation grade, and not a phone call home about it. Every time I did read I would get shaky with goose bumps like a ghost frighten me. I would do well, and then I being scared would go away. Then I would hit a word and do not know how to say it then all the nervousness would come back again. A lot of times if I take too long of a pause, my teacher would correct me. Also sometimes she would have me sit there until I figured out the word. I would hear my classmates whisper or giggle. It would make me feel 10 times worse, almost drop a tear. Ten my teacher would yell out the word, like she frustrated with me. Some of the

I did not know why I was unable to focus when I had been the best reader in school. I had been talkative, but I kept to myself, remained silent, and let bullies pick on me. I hadn't the slightest idea what was going on with my body and mind. Eighth-grade was probably my worst year because I was taunted, harassed, and bullied.…

This was very frustrating, for both myself and my teacher, because at the time I was in a school for early and rapid learners. My second grade teacher had tried to convince my parents to remove me from the school because I did not “belong” there, but I knew I did. After all I had passed the test, just as every other student, and was awarded acceptance into the school. To this day I am still very thankful that my parents did not remove me from the school, because it helped me grow into the person that I am now. Being in a very competitive environment, academically speaking was very…

In second grade I had a fair level of Spanish reading, but what was difficult for me was to learn English and it it took me two days to learn the ABC’s in English. I understood nothing of writing English. My teacher started giving me small lessons on it; I loathed English so much I wanted to give up. In fourth grade, I started to write essays that took me forever, and I was so deeply embarrassed, because I would get my papers basically all in red of corrections. As time passed I hated books more and more, every time I would have to read I would get pissed or thought, “oh great… more reading.” I needed to change. I am not very sure how the change occurred but I know it happened; it was about…

Sitting at the living room table I began to do my homework, which instantly started the wrestling match between letters and my mind, consequently setting off my short fuse when it came to reading. I sat there balling while my parents were nearby in the kitchen. This was not a new occurrence, it had begun to be a regular happening by the time I was in second grade. I couldn’t come up with words for things, or I would blend parts of two different words together making a completely different word. I could not read independently and it caused me to be frustrated anytime the subject came up. My parents had been concerned since kindergarten, although as the years went by my struggle to read started to trouble them more and more, so by second grade they had decided to get me tested.…

I was an unruly child in my elementary and middle school years. I often had trouble conforming and being apart of the class. The reason for this was because learning new concepts were extremely hard when you couldn’t understand the words being used. I had not learnt to read till the second grade and had a terrible lisp which caused me to fumble with my words almost all of the time. My education was being squandered all because I couldn’t understand. By the time I entered middle school, I was in trouble; I either had to try harder or risk being held back, and one teacher took it upon herself to try and change my fate.…

Reading out loud to the class was not one of them. It seemed like all the kids in my class read with the elegance of a trained ballet dancer. Meanwhile, my reading had the elegance of a fish trying to make its way over a fence. It took me forever and a day to read a paragraph. Consequently, I strongly disliked reading and went through great lengths to avoid it. I wish I could say no one noticed or cared; but everyone noticed, and everyone cared. My teacher was among the ones who noticed. She decided it would be best to spend as much time as I could practicing reading with the special reading teacher. She informed me that this included some recesses. At the mere age of ten you might as well of just told me you killed my dog. Four of us, including the reading teacher, occupied a small white room for the rest of the year. We read books like Amelia bedelia, Where the Wild Things are, and various other books I never would have read otherwise. I can honestly say that the reading I looked at as a punishment, turned into one of the best things that could have happened to me in my journey through reading.…

If you choose to write a narrative, it should be a story in which either you or someone you know well was actually involved. You should avoid stories that simply recount accidents. What I mean is this: a good story needs to have the element of choice in it. If you describe an accident, you need to show that decisions led up to it. This story should be about people, about the decisions they make and the consequences that follow.…

I was born and raised in Washington D.C. As a child, I attended an elementary school called Thurgood Marshall. I was placed in Montessori at the age of three and from there my education began to develop. Around the age of five or six, reading became a challenge for me. I struggle with pronouncing words and comprehending what I had previously read. For instance, in the first grade my teacher would pick students to read sections of the mini pages in the Washington Post Newspaper. One day, I was one of the students that were chosen to read. I had an overwhelming feeling of pressure. I struggled to sound out most of the words and begin to stumble over words. After, I read, I had a difficulty with re-telling the story to my teacher.
