Title: “Dancing to Nat King Cole” by James Wall
Plot
The story is about a couple, Charles and Katherine Simpson. They are having lunch with their grown up daughter, Rebecca, at their usual restaurant The Angel. Rebecca asks her mother how Charles is doing because Rebecca thinks he is doing worse than last time. Katherine says that he is fine. But actually he is doing weird things in the house like clears unfinished plates away or cleaning kitchen surfaces over and over again. Charles starts smoking at the restaurant because he forgot the smoking is prohibited out at restaurants. When they got back they put Charles to sleep. A month after their lunch with Rebecca Charles cannot find his book and he gets very angry but when Katherine asks him if he find it he just says: “What are you talking about?”.
Setting
The story takes place at Katherine and Charles’ home. Besides that, it takes place at a restaurant they often visit. They mostly eat out, at the same few familiar restaurants they know. The story lasts a month from their lunch.
Characters
Charles is a helpless person because of a disease. He is forgetting things (page 100) and he is clumsy (page 101) , but besides that he seems like a nice old man who loves his family, because he is always going out eating with his wife and sometimes his daughter and he starts the day being with his wife, eating breakfast, drinking coffee and reading the paper. It seems very peaceful.
Katherine is a woman who cares a lot about her family. She is with her husband every day (page 94), helping him through disease even though it means she needs to put her heart in it, in a way that takes all of her time and efforts.
Rebecca is their daughter, and she is also aware of the problem (page 96) although Katherine does not like to admit how bad it is (page 96). She is grown up (page 95).
