An overview of the National Security Branch, or the (NSB) is that it has four separate, but major components. These components or branches are divided into Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and Terrorist Screening System. The FBI National Security Branch was created by a presidential directive and his headed by a Senior Bureau official with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The NSB was founded in September of 2005 (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2016).
The NSB is comprised of the offices of Counterintelligence Division, Counterterrorism Division, High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group, Terrorist Screening Center, and WMD Directorate. These agencies act in unison, as the lead office responsible to detect, deter and disrupt national security threats our country. these possibilities (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2016). The Counterintelligence Division deals with covert operations and national strategy operations. Think of it as more espionage/spy type activities, but within the country itself, as opposed to the Central Intelligence agency, who operates outside the boundaries of the nation. Although, their exact methods are classified, they have a goal to keep any weapons of a biological, chemical nature, or any other form of weapon of mass destruction from falling into the wrong hands (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2016). Espionage can come in many forms and it’s their responsibility to tackle this matter domestically.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations National Security Branch has an expansive mission, it has far reaching responsibilities, while enduring to ensure that the rights of all American citizens are observed, while their constitutional guarantees are protected.
The FBI as an agency, strives to keep a balance between protecting ensuring and privacy of the American population. Their mission is to collect information whenever possible concentrating on specific threats to the nation, while preserving the rights and civil liberties of the people (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2016). The NSB in partnership or conjunction with the FBI, has their focus centered on activities and threats, which might prove to be dangerous to the people as a whole, or in direct violation of federal laws. Terrorism itself, can be either foreign or domestic in nature. A key component of the NSB’s fight on terrorism is the national joint terrorism task force (Federal Bureau of Investigation,
2016).
The Intelligence Branches main function is to assemble these various pieces of puzzles that form threats to our National Security and formulate an appropriate rejoinder in which to counteract it. They make this happen by combining intelligence along with law enforcement competencies within their operational realm. Terrorists have blurred the lines of what we may have previously considered crimes by integrating commerce, financial, computer hacking and other national strategic vulnerabilities during the years. By combining the investigatory capabilities with the intelligence aspects of the operations, the FBI under the NSB is uniquely outfitted to counteract these threats to our nation’s security (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2016). Both the FBI and NSB in conjunction with other governmental agencies, have built a web of alliances/partnerships, both privately and with business to counteract and identify possible threats to commerce or security (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2016). These partnerships are instrumental in a continually developing world where the lines of espionage and criminal activity come together. It takes a network of intelligence, resources, and trained individuals to combat the global threat our nation must protect itself from in these modern times. The National Security Bureau is one such resource that we depend on to accomplish this very important task.
