Peggy tells bigger that the car has been out all night and bigger lies and says that Jan and Mary was in the car last night. Mary is not up stairs so bigger takes the trunk to the train station anyways because Peggy suggests that Mary is going to make it to the train station. Mrs. Dalton is concerned and Bigger overhears her conversation with Peggy, during which she mentions that she smelled Mary's drunkenness the night before and notes that Mary did not pack all of the clothes that she intended to take to Detroit.

Bigger’s friends were Jack, G.H., and Gus. The gang would play pool and rob stores during their free time. Bigger’s mother warned him that if he did not “stop running with that gang of [his] and do right [he’ll] end up where [he] never thought [he] would...and the gallows is at the end of the road [he] traveling” (Wright, 9). His friends influenced his daily actions and increased his temper problems. However, this friendship did not have as much influence as the overwhelming control as the power white society had over them. The reluctance the friends had about robbing Blum’s exemplifies the amount of influence the white world had on Bigger. Bigger, Jack, G.H., and Gus “had the feeling that the robbing of Blum’s would be a violation of ultimate taboo; it would be trespassing into territory where the full wrath of an alien white world would be turned loose upon them; in short, it would be a symbolic challenge of the white world’s rule over them; a challenge they yearned to make” (Wright, 14). The fear of how the white society would react to the robbery caused doubt in the minds of the friends. The white world seemed to exist on another planet in the eyes of Bigger and his friends; however, white society still had a vast control over them. Bigger longed to be able to do the things white men and women were able to do. The skywriter exemplifies this goal that Bigger has. He…

In this passage, Bigger is reflecting his positive feelings after killing Mary Dalton. He states that even physical weapons, which were his symbol of power, are now replaced with this murder. Bigger feels empowered from his unlawful deed, stating that it gives him “a new-born strength.” This comes to show the lengths one will go to feel power. I personally believe the reason why Bigger holds this murder close to his heart, is because his actions hold him accountable, not his skin. It gives him power because he won’t feel angry, in fact he’ll laugh with them. He’ll laugh at their ignorance. And this is what feeds him; the feeling of liberation from power, something Bigger does not have. He even states that the “feeling of always enclosed in…

We can see the psychological and emotional blindness of Bigger, the blindness to reality by the hyper-religious Ma, and the blindness to the real role and ideals of the Communist party by both Jan and Mary. Perhaps the best use of irony is the physical blindness of Mrs. Dalton. Mrs. Dalton is the epitome of blind; she has very sensitive senses (she notices the smell of alcohol in Mary 's room, saying: "You 're dead drunk! You stink with whiskey!" (86)) but she is unable to see Bigger killing her daughter. Her extra sensitive hearing and lack of sight give Bigger the reason and opportunity to smother Mary. Yet, the true irony falls into the situation surrounding Mr. and Mrs. Dalton 's participation with groups such as the NAACP. While they believe that contributions of ping pong tables to inner city youth will help, their insulting charity to Bigger, coupled with Mr. Dalton 's excessive rent charges, ultimately causes the death of their…
