Naturalism can be defined as the system of thought holding that all phenomena can be explained in terms of natural causes and laws. These natural causes, DNA for example, encode our blood type, hair color …show more content…
and even our skin complexion. However, the nature theory perceives DNA to encompass not only our dimples, but our "abstract" characteristics such as sexuality, patience, personality and aptitude. It is safe to say that if genetics did not play a role in one's self or personality, then siblings, who were raised in the same household with the same conditions, would be similar in the absence of genes. However, a person's genetic disposition does not guarantee a specific behavior; for example, a child whom grows in a home where both parents are alcoholics does not guarantee the child will become an alcoholic. It may represent a more greater chance for the individual to become an alcoholic.
The dictionary defines nurture as " to supply one with what is necessary for life, health and foster development of growth".
A significant other, such as a parent, teacher, or role model can help one to foster development. Do we actually learn who we are by interacting with others? As a little child, I loved to watch Michael Jackson's performances; I would mimic his catchy dance moves and even wear the glittery socks. I learned that I had a passion and art for music; this was something that was not hereditary. Many singers, do not have a genetic voice; their voices are trained to hit notes clearly. In contrast with music, characteristics or traits can be trained by a society or significant others. Ask yourself, why do I prefer hotdogs over sushi, if born in the US or why I prefer curry chicken over snails if born in the Caribbean. Trained taste or shall I say nurtured taste. Although genetic tendencies are important to ones self or personality, many nurture supporters believe that behavior originate from environmental factors of our upbringing. If nurture did not play a role in ones personality, then ALL twins, who were raised in two separate environments would be EXACTLY the
same.
In conclusion, both nature and nurture play in important role on identifying our perceptions, feelings and beliefs. So, was the way we behave encoded in our DNA before we were born? Or has it developed due to our experiences as we mature? Nature provides us with inborn abilities and traits; while, nurture fosters those tendencies and shapes them as we mature through life. Nature goes for the left hook, Nurture goes for the right gab ; whether nurture or nature, it has sure been a good fight.
