Navy Paralegal: Customer Service and the Law The law and its ever-changing characteristics intrigued me at a very early age. Growing up, I wanted to be a lawyer. My goal of becoming a lawyer was a bit impractical due to my procrastination after high school graduation and because of my past financial situation. Not knowing what to do then, led me to join the Navy. The Navy afforded me the opportunity to go to school while working and it also allowed me to change jobs so that I can choose something closely related to my goal of becoming an attorney. That’s when I became a Paralegal, or “Legalman” as the Navy calls it. A Navy Paralegal is not much different from a civilian paralegal. The major difference is that we are better prepared and get specialized training in military law and the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). We provide legal assistance to Sailors and Marines, assist in preparation of legal forms, conduct legal research, maintain legal records, process appeals, electronically submit court documents for the record, and perform various administrative and clerical law office duties. I am able to continue in this career for at least twenty years in order to retire, I receive amazing medical benefits at no cost to me, I am able to use Tuition Assistance to get continuing education, and much more.
