Helen Lee, in her article "How Your Cell Phone Hurts Your Relationships," argues that, “New research suggests that cell phones may serve as a reminder of the wider network to which we could connect, inhibiting our ability to connect with the people right next to us.” Others even may argue that the phone is good because you get to share things with others. Carrie Stienweg, in a New York Times article, "Generation's: Technology Keeps Us Connected," states that without the use of phones people would not be able to connect with people far away and that people with problems help them stay active and not depressed. Although people see it that way I see it a different way Lee writes that people no matter what use their phone for almost everything. Lee explains that we are being less communicative and more…

As stated in the article, “2b or Not 2b” by David Crystal, some people believe that texting is not a natural form of communication and that it is wrecking our language. Although some people may agree with this idea, studies have challenged this opinion. Rather than fearing the consequences of texting, people should embrace this evolution and understand that this new form of communication may actually have benefits on literacy. This author once stated, “there is no evidence that texting teaches people to spell badly: rather, research shows that those kids who text frequently are more likely to be the most literate and the best spellers, because you have to know how to manipulate language.” The moral panic created by this form of socialization should be diminished, as people have the power and ability to shape our future.…

When I am texting a friend, I often do not use the correct words because it is easier because it is much quicker to type it than spell the whole word out. This makes it more like a face to face conversation because I often use acronyms like ‘OMG’ (Oh my God) or ‘lol’ (laugh out loud). Sometimes when texting on my phone I tend to use acronyms quite often. For instance in a conversation with my friend Charlie I said ‘OMG, you have to watch this video LOL’ to which he replied ‘OMD that is so funny’. In a face to face…

E-mal has really destroyed the English language for many people, especially the pre-teen to teenager zone. Words like "LOL" (Laughing at Loud), " Cuz" ( Because), and other words that people are too lazy to write in full. These words, and the grammar along with it is destroying the minds of many young people, especially when a 12th grade English teacher receives a term paper with these type of words in them. That is something that is a very scary thing to think about, especially because the number of people writing this slang type of language is on the rise each year.…

Crystal think that popular conceptions about the effect of texting on the English language are wrong because all the abbreviation, using initial letters for whole word is not at all new. It has been in our language over hundreds of years. For example IOU is known from 1618. Crystal stated that the only thing that change was the medium communication; from letter to mobile phone or computer. Crystal feel like texting is a human ability to be creative with language and to adapt language to suit the demand of diverse setting. It is an evolution as he describes it. Verbal communication, either over the phone, video chat, or in person is less likely to be misunderstood. The reason for this is most people can verbalize there sentiments much more easily, allowing them to communicate there more clearly. Various characteristics, such as, body language, facial expressions and vocal tones are definite indicators of how the person is feeling at the time when communicating in person or by video chat. Texting can potentially be misunderstood as the reader cannot properly assess the mood of the person who is ending the message. A statement that is meant to be humorous can be taken seriously, and conversely a serious comment can be taken casually, leaving the reader and sender with a misunderstanding. An area of equal detriment is that the texting is limited to your writing skills. If the sender cannot express themselves well with writing, the reader can become confused or misinterpret what the sender is trying to say. This will cause a breakdown in communication and could quite possibly end in an argument. The use of acronyms can also be very confusing for those who do not text frequently. I have found that I get confused quite often because I do not utilize texting as often as others and I am not familiar with the multitude of acronyms that are used.…

When most people overhear military personnel conversing with one other, I’m sure their first thought would be that the English language is being butchered because all they hear are acronyms. Examples are abound everywhere: if you overheard me saying that it’s time to go chow at the DFAC, most civilians would just stare at me with a puzzling look, but if other military personnel or someone familiar with the terminology overheard me, they wouldn’t question what had just been said at all; on the contrary, they would just know that it was time to go eat at the dining facility.…

They blame the ‘to the point’ messages from texting and the emoticons to convey emotions via text message.
