In the article “The Man Who Shaped the New South Africa,” Richard Dowden states that “some leader like Nelson Mandela were in prison in South Africa” (2). Basically, the author is saying that democracy and the ruler of South Africa would bump heads and create some chaos bloodshed to the country. Yet, knowing that the apartheid state does not want no political organization and since that they was controlled by the South Africian Communist Party (SACP). Mandela was arrested in 1956 and charged with treason (“Mandela: The face of the fight against apartheid” 1).To put it another way, treason means that the offense of attempting to overthrow the government of one’s country or of assisting its enemies in war.
