Nestlé sets out actions to address child labour in response to Fair Labor Association report on the company’s cocoa supply chain
Nestlé and its partners will involve communities in Côte d’Ivoire in a new effort to prevent the use of child labour in cocoa-growing areas by raising awareness and training people to identify children at risk, and to intervene where there is a problem.
The initiative is part of an action plan drawn up by Nestlé in response to a report on the company’s cocoa supply chain in the West African country by the Fair Labor Association (FLA).
It builds upon existing efforts to develop a more sustainable cocoa supply through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan.
“The use of child labour in our cocoa supply chain goes against everything we stand for. As the FLA report makes clear, no company sourcing cocoa from Côte d’Ivoire can guarantee that it doesn’t happen, but what we can say is that tackling child labour is a top priority for our company,” said José Lopez, Nestlé’s Executive Vice President for Operations.
FLA Findings
The FLA concluded that, with some adjustments and improvements, the Nestlé Cocoa Plan can become a well-rounded developmental programme.
The plan, along with the other initiatives Nestlé participates in, provides the building blocks for a more robust and deep reaching effort, the FLA experts say in their report.
They found that child labour is a reality on cocoa farms in Côte d’Ivoire and has its roots in a combination of factors including poverty and the socio-economic situation of the farmers and their families.
The report says an effective strategy to eliminate the problem must start by tackling the attitudes and perceptions of those in the cocoa supply chain and the communities in which they live.
Nestlé does not own or operate farms in Côte d’Ivoire, but is well positioned to make a positive impact on the livelihoods of workers in the cocoa supply chain, the FLA says, due to its leverage with its suppliers and the volume of

    The solution is Fairtrade. In order to reduce the amount of child laborers in clothing sweatshops, American consumers should purchase Fairtrade clothes and other imported products such as coffee, chocolate and bananas. Producers who are Fairtrade Certified must follow set standards that apply to child labor and human rights made by Fairtrade International. These set standards include prohibition of children under age of 15 can by working for the producer’s business and children who are fifteen and older cannot take part in work that interferes with school or their health. According to Fairtrade International, there are over 1,210 Fairtrade certified producer organizations in 74 different countries. This growing number is significant because among these producers, child labor, hazardous working conditions and unfair wages and hours cease to exist. Also, when American consumers buy Fairtrade products, farmers and producers receive set premiums which are then used to help their local communities. Premiums are used to build schools and other programs for the children. Likewise, Fairtrade staff members come to the communities of their certified producers to form relationships with the children.     Gap, Nestlé and Victoria's Secret are three main corporations that CNN’s Freedom Project exposed. Billion dollar companies, like Nestlé chocolates, rely on underaged children to harvest cocoa beans in extreme conditions. One laborer, Abdul, is a ten year old boy who works day after day, hacking at cocoa pods to reveal cocoa beans. Although Abdul has worked this job for over three years, he has nothing but the ripped clothes on his back, food every so often and scars from a machete (McKenzie). Abdul has never had chocolate, never gone to school and never seen technology. All he knows is work. Victoria Secret also employs children to pick cotton for lingerie items. In Burkina Faso, a small country in Africa, Clarisse and other children work 15 hour days, bending at the waist (Simpson). During harvest, Clarisse works in 100 degree weather picking cotton from a strip of land equivalent to four American football fields (Simpson). Her boss gives her the occasional beating, and if she’s lucky, a meal once a day. Lean and strong, Clarisse doesn’t have a bed, toilet or pay. She is a modern day slave. Gap also recently admitted using child labor in India. According to one ABC News Report “......children were working without pay as virtual slaves in filthy conditions, with a single, backed-up toilet and bowls of rice covered in flies. They slept on the roof (Brown).” Although CNN reports these companies are working with the UNICEF to try and stop the labor, they could do better (McKenzie).
