Economy - Their main economic activities were fishing, shipping, trading, and lumbering.
Geography/resources - Their soil was rocky and not suitable from growing crops. But, corn, pumpkins, rye, squash and beans were planted. They had rocky mountains with thick trees. Also some of their natural resources were fish, whales, forests. New England imported some of their agricultural products from other colonies.
Nationalities - People in the New England colonies were all from England, and came to practice their own religion on the Mayflower.

Reasons for Establishment: All of the New England Colonies were established for religious freedom.
Mayflower Compact: The Mayflower Compact was the first governing document of Plymouth Colony. It was written by the male passengers of the Mayflower. It was important for the growth in representative government in the colonies because it was the first type of democracy recorded in history, soon after, the idea of self government would spread to other parts of the world.
Subsistence Farming: Subsistence farming is when you grow food to provide for the basic needs for the farmer and his/her family, leaving little to no leftovers to be marketed. This type of farming doesn’t provide enough profit to earn a living.
Religious Groups: The roles of religious groups was very important in the establishments of the New England colonies. The New England Colonies may have never been formed if it wasn’t for these religious settlers. Religion impacted the societies if the colonies in the way that they dealt harshly with anyone who opposed their religion. Anyone who dared to challenge the Puritans were often deported, such as Anne Hutchinson who held her own religious meetings in her home and didn’t conform to the rules of the Puritan leaders that governed the colonies.
