I chose “Settling New England” as my topic. The website I had chosen has many intriguing facts. While reading it, it just made me want to read more and more. It also had very descriptive pictures that one could visualize what it was like back in the day will reading. This site is related to chapter 2 out of the book that we read because it talks about the Mayflower and Plymouth Colony, Thanksgiving, Puritan life, and how New England expanded. One of the things that interested me the most was the Mayflower and Plymouth Colony. It’s where hundreds of travelers basically got on a boat called the “Mayflower” in September 1620 that headed to Virginia. They got off course and made it to
Cape Cod, just off the southern coast of what became Massachusetts. The voyage took about two months. Only one death occurred and one child was born. Another thing that caught my attention was the Puritan Life. It is said that often that New England were the one who invented grandparents due to the fact that people were have many children. Puritans also believed that they were doing god’s work. They also believed in predestination. They basically lived by the bible. Then we have the first Thanksgiving. In the autumn of 1621 the Pilgrims had very much to be thankful for. They had a wonderful harvest unlike the previous year. It was until 1863 that President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national celebration. The Plymouth Pilgrims simply celebrated survival.
The most interesting person that I read about was Anne Hutchinson. She was a woman to look up too due to the fact that she stood up for her beliefs even if it was extremely dangerous. She was a very religious woman that believed that the proper behavior from church members conflicted with the doctrine of predefinition. Her leadership and determination made her seem very dangerous to the Puritan order. Throughout the article I learned even more about Religious Freedom and thanksgiving. Those two had to be the most important things I learned more about from the website I choose.
