New Tastes: Eggplant
Eggplant
Couple days ago, I went to visit a friend in Virginia. Every time we meet, we like to decide and cook together what we are going to eat. However, when I got to her house, she was already waiting for me with all the ingredients to make an eggplant pastel.
An eggplant pastel? I have heard the word eggplant every time people talk about vegetable, but I have never even seen one. I was wondering how I was going to help her to cook that. Lucky me, it was not a complicated dish to cook. The ingredients of this dish were eggplant, American cheese, salt, pepper, egg, flour, butter, milk, and béchamel sauce.
First, we had to remove the eggplant’s peel, cut them into slices, and put the slices to soak in salted water for around 20 minutes. Then, we breaded the eggplant in flour, egg and flour again. After all the eggplant were breaded, we fried them all.
While frying the eggplant’s slices, we prepared the béchamel sauce. First we melt butter in a nonstick saucepan, adding flour to it, all at once. We removed the pan from the heat to make the mixture with the help of a wooden spoon in order to dissolve all lumps that appeared. We added into the pot a little preheated milk, and mix it quickly until we get a dense compound. We again placed the saucepan about 10 minutes over a low heat for cooking. We add salt and pepper, and we removed the pan from the heat.
When we were done frying all the eggplant’s slices, we grabbed a pie plate, where we made a layer of eggplant, add cheese, béchamel sauce, and then another layer of eggplant, cheese, and so on till we put them all in the plate. The eggplant was ready to go to the oven, so all the béchamel sauce penetrate the eggplants. We left it in the oven for around 20 minutes.
The eggplant was finally ready to eat. I, personally, did not have any expectations of this dish tasting good even though it looked good. Despite my disinterest, I decide to give it a try, after all it look appetizing. Oh my god! There is not
