Newspapers have a very important place in our life. Reading of newspapers has become a habit for most of the people. But not many people think how newspaper is delivered each day at our home with such ease. In order to study the logistics of newspaper, information was collected from newspaper vendors to the people working in the Audit Department of the newspaper “Times of India”.
Mr. Lalit Joshi, who works in the logistics department of TOI in the Delhi/NCR region, threw light on various newspaper, supplements, processes etc. in the manufacturing of the newspaper and its distribution. The paper quality required for printing in the machine is imported and tender is released for the procurement of the same. The paper comes via shipping and is then further reaches various printing press by train. Similarly, tender is released out for ink, says Mr. Joshi. The material is stored in a godown near the machines which are also imported from other countries.
The editions are divided as up country editions and main city edition for the Delhi office for TOI. Up country editions refer to TOI for Chandigarh edition, Haryana edition, Agra edition, Gwalior edition etc. Previously the newspapers were even sent to Dehradun and Bareli but recently, new presses have been set up there. The printing of the main issue starts from 9:30 p.m. for the Up country edition, as they call it.
The main city edition i.e. the one for Delhi/NCR region , Vallabh Baug, Noida starts at 11:30 p.m. They also have the NIE (Newspaper in Education) issue which is distributed to all the school students in their school. The printing for this begins at 3:30 p.m.
The process is almost similar when it comes to timings and distribution for the Hindi version “Navbharat Times” but it is distributed only in main cities and not sent to Uptown cities.Navbharat times releases the Noida edition, Gurgaon edition, Faridabad edition and Gaziabad edition. There is no School edition released in Hindi.
